Making Over My Son's Room Part 4: Bridge & Railing

Today we're connecting the two sections with a bridge and safety railing. My original plan was to install the railing all the way across, but after creating the bridge and watching my son's joy of jumping off, I decided to change things up and cut the railing in half so there is an intentional section my kids can jump off of safely. This whole project has been so challenging as I adjust things and change up plans, but also SO fun as I learn new techniques, use my creativity and watch my children enjoy it.

Making Over My Son's Room Part 3: Reading Nook and Slide

In case you've missed it, I'm turning my son's room, which is on the third floor of our house, into the ultimate playroom and bedroom space. The room has vaulted ceilings so it was the perfect space to really go big. Today we're wrapping up the section of the room that we've been working on the last few weeks: the reading nook and slide.

DIY Floating Bookshelves

I'm back again with another small project in my son's room before we reveal another section of the room. We did a slide last week and we're tackling some bookshelves this week. It's a pretty simple project, but I wanted a complete tutorial that anyone could access to make their own. I recycled some wood from the guest bedroom headboard for this project and made a plan for a set of shelves that have a bar in front so we can fit big and small books on the shelf without them falling off.

DIY Melamine and Wood Slide

I'm still hard at work on my son’s room makeover. Today’s task is building a melamine and wood slide. I couldn't find any tutorials that were exactly what I wanted so I took pieces of different ideas and started dreaming up what I wanted from scratch. Being able to get creative with planning and giving myself the challenge is one of my favorite things to do! You've probably seen a fair amount of slides people are adding to their playrooms. They are getting pretty popular but the plastic slides are SO expensive. I did a little digging and found a couple of people who had made wood and melamine slides but they didn't give a step by step tutorial. So, once I figured it out for myself, I knew I wanted to share it so you can make one, too!

Making Over My Sons Room Part 2: The Bed

Welcome back to another installment of making over my son’s bedroom. To recap, his room is on the third floor of our house. It's a huge room that will be multipurpose as a guest room, a playroom and his bedroom. The next step in my plan was to make the Murphy bed. I was super excited about this. I got the plans and the parts and was reading the instructions when I realized that I would need to pivot because my son started climbing out of his crib. Our daughter used to climb out of her crib, but once she fell out and got hurt she learned not to go it again. My son, however, is taking it to the next level. He is 2.5 years old but with the size and strength of a 5-year-old. One morning, we went to wake him up and found an empty crib. We frantically searched the house and eventually found him on the main floor (so down 2 flights of stairs) sleeping on the couch. We realized he had made it out of his crib, down the stairs, into his sisters room, out of his sisters room, down another flight of stairs and into the family room. Apparently I am raising a ninja because we didn't hear a thing! We realized that we had to do something to keep him in his bedroom for his safety and quickly so that took priority over the Murphy bed. So I went to work building him his own bed.
