Sensory Items We Love
As a neurodivergent household, we have a few sensory items laying around. There are a few that have held up over the years and are incredibly popular with my kids, so let’s talk about them!
Tile Alternatives for the Letterfolk Tile Mat
Since Letterfolk was bought by Pattern Brands, they have discontinued the entire tile mat line. I found a few different tile options on Etsy and decided to see how they held up.
Visual Aids We Have in Our Home
If you are new here, I have created a bunch of digital downloads available on my website. There's a number of free downloads, and then there are a bunch of other ones that are available for purchase for $5 each. I've created these over the years mostly for my daughter. She is nine and she's autistic. Over time, we've discovered there are certain things we've needed in our home like a social story or a life skill, just things we thought we should have available every day.
Updating Emergency Kits
Hi friends! It's been a minute since I've done a post. I'm still struggling with my health and my energy levels are VERY low as I work with a team of doctors to figure out what's going on, so thanks for being patient! I've wanted to continue work on my son's room, but just haven't had it in me. So instead we're talking about updating the emergency preparedness kits we made a few years ago. When I made them originally, I made a kit for each member of my family, and the feedback I got was very mixed. Some people thought they were great, some thought they were over the top and some questioned why I would even need them in the first place. Well, in the past few years the US alone has had fires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and along with a global pandemic. Personally, I'm not taking any chances and am going to prepare my family as best as I can. Many parts of the world understand the importance of a 72-hour kit. It keeps necessities ready and available for you for if you encounter a disaster or if for some reason you need to leave your home quickly. So, let's restock ours so you can see what's essential for our family at different stages.
DIY Spring Flowers
Welcome back to Breezing Through! Its been a few weeks since I have consistently posted. I've had some health issues going on that have made me not feel well enough to do a lot. I'm slowly trying to figure out what's going on, though, so thanks for being patient with me! This week I decided that I was sick of not creating and building because they bring me joy so I'm starting with something small to fill my cup. Today, we're doing some cute and simple pipe cleaner flowers.
Personalized Party Wall
Hi! Sydney here again with another craft for you. Today it’s personalized party walls. This all started when I looked at the large wall in my kitchen the night before my son’s 2nd farm themed birthday and said “that could be a barn”. Since then the (sometimes wayyyyy too detailed) party walls have become a tradition. Do I sometimes hate myself for starting this tradition? Absolutely. Is it all worth it when I see the joy It brings my kids? Definitely. I use inexpensive materials and a little creativity and they end up being a HUGE hit and something that my kids look forward to every year!
Cardboard Elephant Heads
Today I'm going to show you how to make an elephant helmet. I know it sounds random, but my daughters elementary school asked me to help with the costumes for the school musical. I made elaborate ocean scenery last year for Finding Nemo and am making the elephant costume heads for this year's performance of The Jungle Book. My daughter is a separate elephant so this isn't her costume, but I made them for the rest of the "elephant herd". The school requested 6 total and wanted something that you could see the kids' faces, but was more elaborate than a headband with ears. I wasn't finding any tutorials online that were what we were looking for so I kind of had to make up my own process, but it ended up working out SO great so let me show you what I did.
Paper Cup Crane Party Craft
Hi friends! It’s Sydney here, one of the craft loving members of the Breezing Through team. I have become the dedicated craft center leader at every one of my second graders class parties. We’ve done cardboard easy haunted house, Christmas trees and most recently a crane game that was a huge hit with the kids at the Valentines party. This is fun, requires only a few supplies, very little prep and can be customized for any party, or just to combat boredom with your kiddos. Let me show you how I did it!
How to Swap a Pedestal Sink for a Vanity
We have three full baths and one half bath in our home. When we moved into the house 5 years ago we only had a pedestal sink in the half bath. The house in general is VERY low on storage so I have spent 5 years adding storage wherever I can but have put this bathroom on the back burner. My husband works from home in our bedroom, so I usually get ready for the day downstairs so I can keep an eye on my son while I do. However, having all of my hair/makeup stuff downstairs makes the kitchen area really cluttered so I decided to finally bite the bullet and create storage in the bathroom.
How to Add Caster Wheels to a Round Chair
My parents bought these chairs when they moved into their current house about 5.5 years ago. My mom got them to go at the ends of her dining table since she has long benches flanking both sides. However, they have always been kind of short, making them an awkward height to the table. We found some wheels that we liked to go on them hoping that they would give the chairs some height, but initially I didn't think they would work because there was a rubber plate in the way. Well, we revisited that this week and it turns out it is a lot easier than I initially thought!
Valentine’s Day Crafts
Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and after a year of not feeling really like myself where I didn't do a lot of crafting projects I decided I want to get back to crafts that spark joy for me. Valentine's Day crafts in particular have always been something that I enjoy so I did a few this year that I wanted to share with you. Most of these crafts are pretty simple and require minimal supplies but are fun all the same.
Making Over My Son's Room Part 8: Trim and Details
After a break over the holidays, I'm back to share the most recent updates and additions to my son's room. I tried to add a few fun things to the space to give it an extra dash of fun as well as finishing up the trim.
