Making Over My Son's Room Part 2: Adding to Our Nugget Couch

I'm continuing the process of making over my sons room and on todays agenda is adding to our Nugget couch. I bought our Nugget in 2019 and didn't actually get it until 2020. This was back when they were doing limited drops and they were pretty rare. I ordered it for my daughter's birthday, and we luckily got it the week before they shut their factory down for COVID. We have loved it and it has been crucial in play time for both of my kids. I even ended up getting a second cover for it when I redid my son's nursery, and so now we have green and pink covers. Having two covers is nice because I can wash one and I still always have a cover on it. While planning out the steps for my sons room makeover, I thought that it would be really nice to have some more pieces for the Nugget without spending the money to get a new Nugget.

I went to Joann's before they closed down, and found some round and square pieces of foam. The squares were really thick, so I only got two of those and the rounds were thinner, so I needed four so that I could stack them and they would be similar thickness and have two rectangle cushions and two circle cushions. I also needed to make covers for them. I was debating between choosing complimenting colors to our covers or choosing fabric that matched as closely as possible. I finally landed colors that were as close as I could get to our existing covers. I decided to make a green set and a pink set so that I still had two covers for each one and could change things up.It's a fairly simple sewing project, not necessarily beginner, but easy enough that someone who isn't a pro seamstress can do it. I've been sewing on and off for more than 10 years now, but am not a pro by any means. I was able to find matching thread and zippers for the project, though the green zippers were a lot smaller than I would've liked, so I just kind of make it work.

Since I bought enough fabric to do a set of covers for all four cushions in both colors, I decided that I needed to have pattern. When I sew, usually just wing it without patterns since, like I said, I'm an amateur. I made patterns using printer paper that I taped together and then traced out what I needed using each foam piece. I realized that I gave too much of a seam allowance, so I had to go back in and cut down the patterns a little bit. I learned that instead of giving a seam allowance on the actual pattern, I needed to make the pattern as close to the actual piece as possible, and add the seam allowance while I was cutting the pattern out. I made sure to use a box and level as a flat surface to draw lines because I notoriously can't draw a straight line to save my life. Once I had all the patterns cut out, I decided to start cutting out fabric.

I started off with the green fabric. I laid my patterns down and started cutting them. I originally started doing this with a pair of scissors, but quickly realized that my scissors weren't sharp enough, so I switched to a rotary cutter and mat. So I cut a top piece, bottom piece, and one solid side piece that I could sew all the way around for the round pillows and then top, bottom and four sides for the rectangle pillows. After everything was cut out I was able to start my favorite part, the sewing. I started with the round pillows.

Once I got all of the green pieces sewn together, I needed to adhere the two small rounds to each other to make the pillows. I just used craft adhesive that I sprayed onto one of the cushions, pushed them together, and then let them sit for about 30 minutes. I originally was going to put batting around the outside of the foam circle to keep it from looking like it was two pieces put together. However, once I put the fabric on I felt like it wasn't needed. I repeated the whole process of cutting and pinning with the pink fabric. I always do the zippers first before I do anything else so that I can visualize where it needs to be placed. After I had the zipper sewn on, I attached the rest of the pieces to each other, and got all of the cushion covers.

Then it was time to put the foam pieces into the covers. It took a little bit of work to get them in just because the fabric and the foam don't really work super well together while I was trying to slide the foam in, the plus side to that was I knew that they would stay put. I probably could have ironed or straightened out the seams a little bit, but it didn't bother me so I wasn't worried about it. I now have four new pieces to go with our nugget, that were about $10 a piece with extra covers when we need the change. I decided to have the pink cushions with the green couch because I like how they looked mixed. I'll share the patterns for these in a download so that you can make some extra cushions too!
