Social Stories to Prep for the New School Year
It's back to school time which means your kids are either already back in school or about to start school very soon and for those of use with neurodivergent kids, the changes that come with the new school year can be hard. So, I wanted to remind you that there are some social stories that I've made that are available for download including a new one, which is specifically about going back to school, that I think will be really helpful during this time.
Downloads I Made To Make Your Life Easier
Over the years I have come up with a few systems that make my life SO much easier. I've worked hard to make them into editable downloads that I know will make your everyday life go smoothly as well. Lets go over them!
New Home Binders
Last year, I released The Home Binder download, which gives an outline and sections on how to create your own home binder. For those of you that are not familiar with the home binder, this tool gives you a place to put all of the information you need about your home. It includes your floor plan, flooring details, light fixtures, appliances, etc. That way, whenever you need to go back to reference, fix, or update something, you have all that information in one place. It's also a really great thing to pass on to the next owner of your house. Well, after a lot of feedback, I have now created three additional binders based off of the HomeBinder. We have the HomeBinder Volume 2, the Apartment Binder, and the Life Binder Volume 2. So, I'm going to give you a quick run-down on each of the new binders.
Forever File Box
I know I'm not the only one who struggles to keep track of my kids important papers, so my team and I have come up with a new download I think you are going to LOVE. It's a place to keep every important thing for your kids (or you!) and its called The Forever File Box. I've given you everything you need and all you have to do is grab the supplies and put it together. Let me show you how it works!
Packing List + Free Download
When I first shared my neurodivergent travel tips, I had a lot of people ask me about packing. For some reason, packing causes me a great bit of anxiety. You would think it would be the opposite considering I have been packing and traveling internationally since the age of five, but that's just how my anxiety works. Despite my anxiety, at this point I'm a pro at packing well and packing light. I famously took just a tiny carry-on and a purse for 10 days in Europe. I wanted to share my tips and tricks with you so you can pack like a pro as well!
Visual Schedule
After Jackie was diagnosed as autistic, one of the things I learned that was really helpful for her was having a visual scheduled board. It was something they used in her special education preschool class that was really helpful for her. Once COVID hit and I was teaching her at home, I knew it would be beneficial for us to use one around the house as well. So I decided to put one together myself.
Autism Binder
When I shared my binder organization system a few years ago, I also shared the autism/medical binder I created for Jackie. At that time, a lot of the overwhelming response I got was: I wish my parents had done something like this for me and then given it to me when I graduated! Combine that feedback with conversations I've had with other parents I knew, I wanted to create something universal that had all of the information someone with a new diagnosis would need in one place.
Using Social Stories to Prepare for New Experiences
Have you ever heard of a social story? This is something we learned about in therapy with our daughter. They are extremely helpful when we are introducing new concepts, new situations, or stuff she's never done before. And while our daughter is autistic, this actually works for pretty much any kid in any situation: kids with anxiety, kids that don't have anxiety, or kids that just need that additional structure knowing what's going to happen when they have a new experience.
Simplifying Mornings with a Clothing Choice Board
Jackie was having a hard time getting dressed in the morning. It seemed to be very overwhelming and causing a lot of anxiety for her which made our mornings really hard. So we talked to her therapy team and we came up with this idea of a clothing choice board.
The Home Binder + Download
In 2021, I shared my home binder on TikTok and it went viral. When we moved into our home, I decided I wanted a way to keep track of all the information about our house including the information that we got from the builder when we bought the house, the warranty details, appliance information, etc. I did this for my own reference, but also so any future owners of the house would have the information too. I loved how it turned out so I ended up creating a digital download so that anyone could make a home binder. This binder has worksheets with all of the information that you can input about your home, along with detailed instructions on how to find the information, because I know a lot of people don't have that. I wanted to make this process as simple and easy as possible for anybody who wanted to create their own home binder.
Built in Bookshelves with Bench + Download
The bookshelf we had in Jackie’s bedroom just was not cutting it. It was overflowing, it wasn’t secured to the wall and there was too much extra stuff that we wanted to put on it that we just didn’t have room for. I went to Pinterest to look for something that might work for the space. I ended up finding a Pottery Barn shelf that had a ledge on it that I absolutely loved. I did not, however, love the price. So, I came up with my own much taller design of that shelf, got all the measurements I needed and got to work.
