Revisit All of the Closet Projects Part 2: My Parents’ House

Over the 6 years I have been doing DIY projects, closets have become a particular specialty of mine. I’ve completed many closet re-vamps in every floor of my house as well as multiple in my parents’ home. I thought it would be fun to do a recap of those projects to see how far I’ve come. This week we will focus on all of the closets at my parents’ house. If you're not familiar, my parents live about 20 minutes away from us. Their house is huge and gorgeous and the previous owner did a lot of amazing customizations, but the closets still weren't set up in a way that worked for their needs.

My parents have a pretty large primary bedroom suite. They both have closets adjacent to the large bathroom. Both of the closets are huge, my mom has filled hers pretty completely, but my dad doesn't need that much space. He only needs about half of his closet space, and had no use for the amount of drawers in the closest. So, I took out the drawers and was able to repurpose them at my house. I added more shelf space and took things to the ceiling, since my dad is 6'4" he has no issue reaching things. On the other side of the closet I made space for extra storage for household items on the second floor.

In the hall closet, I took out the rod and added a set of shelves and a separate hanging rod. This made the closet a lot easier to utilize and my mom likes how much she can keep things a lot more organized with the shelves.

My mom has a craft room on the ground floor that she wanted to be more functional. She spends a lot of time doing different crafts and projects. She wanted another desk area so we took the closet in that room and added a desk and shelves. It's been great to have another workspace for the Cricut or sewing machine. She loves how much more functional this makes the room.

On the third floor of my parents’ home, there is a loft area that they made into a room for guests. It doesn't have an official closet but we wanted to make it usable for when people stay here. I originally put shelves in when they moved in, but went back to it a few years later after I had learned a lot more about DIY and knew I could make it better. We added shelves and a hanging area. It's not huge but its functional for guests. My ADHD kicked in with this project and I didn't end up finishing the doors but my mom has been reminding me to order those for a few years so I will officially finish it when I get those doors.

Revisit All Of The Closet Projects Part 2: My Parent’s House | Wall of Closets

The huge closet project on the second floor was one I designed specifically for my grandparents. When my parents moved into the house, they moved my grandparents in as well with the intention of being able to care for them as they got older. There are two rooms with a Jack and Jill bathroom. Each bedroom had a small walk in closet but when they renovated, they removed the small closets in favor of one large wall of closets making both rooms a little suite. I created boxes that could be inserted along the wall, and then each cabinet could be customized for what my grandparents needed. In the midst of the remodel, my grandmother very suddenly passed away while visiting family in Utah and it was devastating for everyone.

I had all these plans for this beautiful closet for them, with space for my grandmother's accessories and all of her favorite things. After she died, it took me a long time to get back to the closet, it was just really emotional. However, my grandfather came home and he still needed a closet so I installed things and then walked away for a little bit. It ended up being a great storage space and will be great for the next owner of the home.
