Revisit All of the Closet Projects Part 1: My House

Over the 6 years I have been doing DIY projects, closets have become a particular specialty of mine. I’ve completed many closet re-vamps on every floor of my house as well as multiple in my parents’ home. I thought it would be fun to do a recap of those projects to see how far I’ve come. This week, let’s look through all of the closets at my house.

Revisit All Of The Closet Projects Part 1: My House | Coat Closet

My house is a builder-grade house so when we moved in everything was really minimal and basic. There are so many things I really wish they did differently, and so many things I wish I had input on, but since it was finished when we bought it, we had to work with what we had. The closet only came with one wire shelf (if you know me you know I DESPISE wire shelves) and the closet, just like most of the closets in our house does not use our 12 foot ceilings to their full advantage. I took out the wire rack and built custom shelves to go inside, along with two hanging rods. I built the shelves so I could fit buckets in them, and then made sure there was space on the very bottom to fit our stroller.

When we bought this house, there was no closet under the stairs, but we had a contractor make one to use the wasted space. After the contractor drywalled the new closet, I painted it, put in flooring and baseboards and the hanging storage. This space has been a few things over the years, simply storage, a play area and now a little of both.

The outside/deck closet kind of mirrors my closet where it's three feet wide and 15 feet long, except the door is on the end instead of in the middle so it's an awkward long skinny space. When we first moved in, we had to just kind of shove everything in there but eventually, I built a set of long shelves that make it so much easier. I have everything labeled in buckets for easy access which makes a big difference.

When we moved into this house, I wanted to change our closet because it was two sets of wire shelves all the way around. The closet is large, about 3 feet deep and 15 feet wide with wasted space all the way to the ceiling. It's kind of a walk-in closet, but not really. We played with it for a long time, adding our dressers, random bookcases and anything else we already had to make it functional. I decided to do a closet similar to the IKEA closets people do, except with other materials since there isn't an IKEA close to us. It turned out better than I had hoped for and even a couple years later there is nothing I would change about it.

Revisit All Of The Closet Projects Part 1: My House | Daughter’s Closet

One of first projects I did in this house was my daughter's closet. It is definitely due for another re-vamp because she's older and has different needs for her closet. I'm probably going to tear out the shelves on the left-hand side and just do something different in that space. We also have a trunk in her closet that kind of makes things complicated, just because we use it for storage and there's really nowhere else to put it. The closet also has to be free to access to the HVAC unit for the second floor.

Revisit All Of The Closet Projects Part 1: My House | Son’s/Storage Closet

On the 3rd floor of the house the first thing you come across is a closet. The builder put the hot water heater in that closet as well which makes it another awkward closet to redo. I had a lot of issues with trying to figure out what to do with this closet, and first just kind of shoved stuff in there, but eventually came up with a plan to add both shelves and drawers to best utilize the space. I added the dressers that were in our closet and moved shelving around to make it fit what I needed. At this stage, my son doesn't use any of the closet for his clothes because we keep them downstairs where he is most often so this closet acts as another great storage closet for us.
