Peel & Stick Wallpaper for Powder Bathroom

DIY

In 2021, I decided to upgrade our very basic builder grade half bath on our first floor. It's a tall space so I wanted to split it up by adding a chair rail. I knew I wanted to do some wallpaper on the top and after doing some research, I decided to go with the peel and stick wallpaper from West Coast Wallpaper. It was so simple to order: after finding a pattern I liked, I gave them the measurements for the bathroom. They sent it as a set of panels that were clearly labeled so I knew exactly what to do.

I needed to pick out a paint for the bottom half below the chair rail. This was tough, I just couldn't find something I liked! I downloaded the Benjamin Moore Color Portfolio app that has a color capture option. You can take a picture of an item, upload it to the app and then it will give you the different colors of what's in that picture. The color that matched the best was Deep Ocean. I have to say, I was really impressed! Once I got the paint, I could see that Deep Ocean was exactly the same as the blue in the wallpaper. I went through and I painted everything below the chair rail. I wasn't sure at first if I was going to paint the chair rail or not, but I decided at the last minute I wanted it painted.

I didn't end up taping above the chair rail since I was covering it with wallpaper. I did two coats of Deep Ocean by Benjamin Moore, and since this is a bathroom, I did a semi-gloss as the finish. I painted the outlet and light switch so everything would blend seamlessly and I LOVE how it turned out.

Peel and Stick Wallpaper for Powder Bathroom | Installing the Wallpaper

I got started on hanging the wallpaper. The instructions West Coast Wallpaper sent for the wallpaper installation were to tape all of the panels to the ceiling. This is so you can visualize where you want them to go before you start to do the actual peel and stick, just to make sure everything lines up how you like it. After I did that, I started applying the first peel and stick panel. I applied each panel so there was a little bit of an edge left at the top and then I trimmed the excess off with a box cutter, and then did the same thing at the bottom.

These panels are designed to overlap just a little bit, and the instructions show you exactly where you should overlap them, which is really helpful. I've installed other peel and stick wallpaper as well as traditional wallpaper and I have to say this was really, really easy in comparison. If I messed up a little bit I could easily just peel it off the wall, realign it, and stick it back on. Now, a year and a half after install, it still looks great!

Peel and Stick Wallpaper for Powder Bathroom | Finishing Details

I ended up splitting up this project over about a week so I did it in sections when I had the time. If I could have done this without stopping, it probably only would've taken three days to finish; 1 to paint, 1 to install the wallpaper and then another day for finishing work like a new light fixture and decor.  I had my daughter do a painting for this bathroom because she was going through a painting phase, and I thought it was really cute to add a personal touch from her. I measured the canvas and I cut four pieces of framing wood. I mitered the ends at a 45 degree angles, spray painted them gold, used some wood glue and my favorite 90 degree angle clamps, attached the canvas to the frame and hung it on the wall. I found unfinished wood stools at Hobby Lobby and gave Jackie the same paint colors I had given her when she made her painting, and she painted the stool. I love letting her help with what she can. She’s always so proud of herself and it makes me smile every time I see her artwork displayed in our home.

After our custom painting and stool were added, I installed a gold toilet paper roll holder, a gold towel hook, a gold mirror, and a washable rug from Target. For the finishing touch, I installed a waterfall faucet, which I love. It's so nice, and I love the mix of metals in here now. This space turned out exactly how I wanted it to and I still love it a year later! Everything from this project is linked below.
