Modern Kitchen Table & Chairs Makeover | Why I Did It
Welcome to my modern kitchen table and chairs makeover! This was a fun, few day project that spruced up an older set of table and chairs to help them look more cohesive. The chairs, table and bench are all separate pieces. They aren't from the same or similar set so they don't match at all. This was an easy, fun and cheap way to make them look like they go together!
I know that many would question why I would paint these beautiful wood pieces. I don't have anything against the wood color, I just didn't feel like they worked in our new house as is and like I said, I wanted them to look more cohesive. I have linked all of the products we used at the bottom of this post so you can see what we used!
Modern Kitchen Table & Chairs Makeover | The Process
So let's talk about the process! Like I said, this was an easy and fairly inexpensive process. Emma helped me with this project and actually came up with the idea to paint the chairs another color. We were doing the first coat of white on everything and we both felt like the chairs and table blended into the counter and stools so they needed a pop of color. I love the yellow that we decided on!
To start, we sanded each piece by hand using 220 grit sand paper. It didn't take long and it was just enough to help the paint adhere to the furniture. In the past I have used an orbital sander on furniture before painting, but that was going to be difficult with the chairs!
Our house is brand new and the builders left the extra paint they didn't use. I don't plan on using the paint on the walls again (it's very flat) so I decided to use it on the furniture I was redoing as either the main color or a primer. I have used it a few times now and I love it! The color is Sherwin Williams Arctic White. Like I said, we decided that it was too much white for the chairs to be white as well. So we proceeded with the table being white and used a mini roller to make the top look smooth.
We used yellow spray paint for the chairs and bench, which was much easier than hand painting! I would highly recommend doing this if you are painting a chair. You will find you get an even coat and it will take a lot less time!
Modern Kitchen Table & Chairs Makeover | Sealing and Protecting
Once everything was painted, we knew that there needed to be something to seal and protect the paint. I am a huge fan of lacquer on furniture to help with chipping. We used this can of lacquer on the table and used spray on lacquer for the chairs and bench.
I would HIGHLY recommend doing this on any piece of furniture you end up painting. You also want to add multiple coats for pieces that receive high traffic or usage, like a table or chairs.
Modern Kitchen Table & Chairs Makeover | Where We Got Them
When we moved into our house, we needed some furniture that we didn't have. Since my parents and grandparents were combining houses, I was able to get a few pieces from them so we didn't have to buy new things. The table and the bench are from my grandparents and the two chairs are from my parents. There are two more chairs that we will be adding to this set but my parents are currently using them right now while they find the kitchen chairs they want to buy. Once I get those, I will paint them yellow too!
