DIY Modern Wood Patio Chairs + Deck Reveal | Deck Furniture

Have you ever looked into buying deck furniture, like nice deck furniture? It is so expensive! I was having a really hard time finding something that was in our budget but I also loved the look of. Since I have been DIYing for awhile, feel like I am pretty handy, and know I can learn on the go, I decided to build our furniture instead! I found some tutorials from Angela over at Angela Marie Made that I LOVED and decided to make those. The plans for the chair and the coffee table are $5 each but the couch tutorial is free! I felt like $10 for two plans was reasonable since I was going to building these myself. The other nice thing is Angela walks you through how to figure out the cuts you need to make if you are using different cushions than she did.

I LOVE how the furniture turned out! I had a lot of fun building it all. I am sharing a full video of making the chairs on IGTV today so check that out if you love watching DIY videos!

I bought my cushions from Target, the exact ones are now sold out. But I would highly suggest, just as Angela did, to buy the cushions first. You need to build the furniture to fit the cushions, so you need to have those measurements. And you don't want to just assume that you can get the cushions you have sitting in your Amazon/Target/World Market cart.

DIY Modern Wood Patio Chairs + Deck Reveal | The Cost

Including the cost of all of the cushions, some of which I bought on sale, the total cost of this project was $300. I didn't have to buy any additional tools, I already had everything I needed. The outdoor stain & sealer that I used, I also used on several other projects in the house. You can see from the prebuilt options I linked at the bottom of the post, this is a lot cheaper than the cost of a full set of furniture!

Now I know that many of you may not be interested in building your deck furniture so I have linked some similar furniture for you! The prices on these will explain why I opted to build though!

DIY Modern Wood Patio Chairs + Deck Reveal | Styling the Deck

I wanted this deck to be a space that we would spend a lot of time. It is on the third floor of our house, just off of the loft. There is a spigot up there along with two drains, so we have put Jackie's pool up there. It is easy to run in and outside all day long.

Originally, I wasn't going to add a rug up here but the tiles on our deck get really hot. They are are really cool material that suck up water and drain it towards the gutter drains. But in the middle of the day, they are very hot on bare feet. So I found this rung from Boutique Rugs and we love it. Being a lighter color, it doesn't get hot and it is an outdoor rug that can just be hosed down if it needs to be cleaned!

Jackie's pool clearly went in the corner closest to a drain and closest to the spigot. I originally had a really cute inflatable pool for the deck but it was punctured during the move and gave out after only two days of being here. Finding any kind of pool in the middle of summer, during a pandemic, was almost impossible. Thanks to Walmart for saving the day! Turns out, I love this pool! Since it is plastic, it won't pop. It stands up to Jackie's aggressive play and can just be popped back into place. And when we aren't using it, it goes into the outdoor closet.

DIY Modern Wood Patio Chairs + Deck Reveal | Plants

I went back and forth about plants for the deck. I wanted the look of plants but I knew if I had larger trees/plants, I would likely kill them. So I opted for UV resistant fake outdoor plants for the tree, more tropical plants that will thrive here without too much work and then herbs that we will use for the smaller plants. I am excited to see our little garden space grow!
