Creating a Cozy Landing Space

When I first started redoing our primary bedroom, we moved my husband's desk over to the corner of the room. That took away the space we were using previously for our full length mirror. I knew I needed to find a new space for it because it was just awkwardly sitting behind the bedroom door and it just wasn’t going to work. Hanging it on the back of the door wasn't an option either because there was too much light coming in from behind it. I spent some time wandering around our house and decided the landing at the top of our first set of stairs was going to be the best option since there was a good amount of space to work with. I liked that there was nothing on the wall, the lighting was good and there was plenty of space for me to make this a cozy little nook, so I got to work.

I knew the space would look the best if I hung the mirror, however I’ve never hung this mirror before. It always has always just been propped up against a wall. I found a mirror hanging kit from Amazon. If you're familiar with a French cleat, it works similar to that. There's a small bar on the wall and then one the mirror, and they clip together. This ensures it hangs really nicely and the weight is evenly distributed. It also comes with a built-in level, which is really handy when you're hanging it. This is a large, heavy mirror so I felt like this was a better solution than trying to put it on nails or trying to use a wire and attaching it to the mirror. This mirror hanging kit was going to be the most sturdy option.

I measured the length of the mirror, decided exactly the height and width I wanted it hung, found the middle of that location and hung the wall side of the mount. Once that was done, I hung the mirror side of the mount, which was pretty easy. Then I hung the mirror on the wall. The nice thing about this mounting system is that you don’t have to be exact. If it's off just a teeny tiny bit on either side, it's not a big deal. With this hanging system, I’m able to pull on and adjust the mirror and its still secure. If you wanted to add some sort of adhesive to the bottom of the mirror for an extra sense of security you definitely could, but I didn’t feel like it was necessary.

I used painters tape to mark the height of the different stools I was looking at. Visually, I wanted to see what height would look the best and where they would hit the mirror before ordering. I added a beautiful shag rug with a few different colors in it, a stool that even has built in storage and some faux plants (you guys know by now that I don’t do real plants!) just to make it more homey.
