Painting Our Organization Drawers
One of the first things I did when I got to Buenos Aires was go to a local hardware store and buy a set of MDF drawers. They were kind of plain and I really wanted to brighten them up a little bit. My daughter and I got some paint and paint brushes, and decided to get creative!
Painting Our Organization Drawers | Color Blocked
If I did this project at home, I would have like gone to Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore for really good paint. However, this is what I had access to and what I was willing to spend money on. Since we're only gonna be here for six months, we will leave this set of drawers with someone we have met here.
My daughter wanted to do a bunch of different designs on the drawer fronts. I'm not saying we won't do that, but for now, this is what we're doing. We decided to go with pastel colors and, since I didn't use primer, every color needed two coats of paint to cover up the MDF.
We went with a color block look because there is a neighborhood here in Buenos Aires that has buildings that look a lot like that so it's kind of reflective of that neighborhood.
We started with the outside first. All of the bigger sides used a full container of paint with both coats of paint. The front of each drawer took substantially less paint which was nice and again, those took at least two coats of paint. I was really careful about doing the edges of the drawers as well. I did all of the drawers, my daughter was not interested in helping me with them which was totally fine. I had to repeat a couple of colors we'd already used, but I did run into a problem where I ran out of pastel colors and was left with only the bold colors that didn't vibe with the rest of the theme. To fix this issue, I took orange and yellow and mixed them together with the pastel pink I had, which made them more like creamsicle colors instead of the neon colors I originally had.
Each coat of paint need to dry for quite a while and then when I was done I did let them dry overnight to fully set. If I can, I'm going to try to find a something to put on top of the paint to kind of seal it in like a top coat, because I have a feeling this is going to scratch off pretty easily because it's not the most high-end of paints. It is fine because it works for what we needed it for.
The moral of the story is that you do not have to spend a ton of money on paint, or supplies, or even a set of drawers to get something you absolutely love, even if it's for a short period of time. I love how the colors came together when I put the drawers in. They look so cute, so bright, so fun. It is another thing that makes the apartment feel more homey and we are happy with how it turned out.
