How to Use a Jigsaw
I'm back again with another simple tool overview. Today we're talking about how to use a jigsaw. Let's get started!
How to Use a Jigsaw | How to Start
The saw I'm using is a Craftsman jigsaw. It is a 5 AMP corded jigsaw with 4 orbital settings. Additionally, I have a set of blades to go with it that will cut through metal, wood, or plastic depending on the blade. One of the benefits of having a jigsaw is the amount of materials it cuts through with the right blades. The settings on this particular saw also allow you to change the speed of the blade depending on the type of material you're using, which will get you a cleanest cut.
If you're cutting a hole out of a piece of wood and you're starting in the middle, there are two different ways you can do this. First, you can either angle the blade and start pushing it in until it is fully through the wood and then guide the jigsaw where you want it to go. This technique is how I originally learned to use a jigsaw, and, frankly, I wouldn't recommend it. The problem is that you don't have a lot of control of the saw and therefore your cuts aren't going to be as precise.
The second and more preferred way of using a jigsaw it to use a drill and large bit to drill a hole through where you want to start the jigsaw. Then insert the jigsaw blade into that hole and cut the wood in the direction you need.
How to Use a Jigsaw | Why Use a Jigsaw
There are a lot of people much more comfortable using a jigsaw over a circular saw because you have a lot more control with a jigsaw. Jigsaws are also really great for detail work. So, if you're doing something like scallops or waves, a jigsaw is going to be your best bet. Similarly, when you see people doing things around the holidays like cutouts that someone has done by projecting an image onto a piece of plywood, it's usually done with a jigsaw
I also like to use a jigsaw for when I am doing smaller cuts I can't do with my circular saw. For example, I used my jigsaw to cut out the notches for the top of the cabinets I put in my family room. My circular saw would not have been able to get that little tiny section and the jigsaw did.
I love my jigsaw and it's become one of my favorite tools! If you're wanting to start using a jigsaw too, the one I have and the extra blades I bought and a few other options are linked below.
