How to Refresh Wrought Iron Furniture

Let's talk about refreshing wrought iron furniture. If you keep it outside, it will inevitably end up looking really dirty and gross even though it's probably still in really good shape. We refreshed two sets of my mom's wrought iron furniture: one set she has had for over 30 years and the other set came with the house when she bought it in 2020. Let me take you along for the process!

First things first, lets talk about the supplies you will definitely need. I wanted to use my paint sprayer so I had these awesome paint jumpsuits, gloves, and footies for our shoes. We also had goggles and a respirator mask because you really don't want to get this paint in your eyes, nose, or mouth.

The paint I used is a special tractor and truck paint we got from a tractor supply store. We used about four gallons of it. We also used this really cool pop-up tent my mom got for painting which ensures that the item is covered to prevent any debris getting on the furniture but also is well-ventilated.

How to Refresh Wrought Iron Furniture | The Process

The first set of furniture we did was a table and five chairs. After scrubbing them clean and letting them dry, we moved them inside the tent to start painting. We used a really inexpensive paint sprayer and I was pleasantly surprised with how great of a job it did.  It didn't clog up and made it really easy to get into all of crevices of the chairs.

After painting, we left them to dry in the tent for at least a couple of days. We live in Tennessee where it rains all the time, so we had to make sure we were doing this project in a 2-3 day window when it wasn't projected to rain.  We decided to hand paint the larger table because it had a ton of teeny tiny holes, and we wanted to make sure every little bit got painted. Since there were three of us working on this project, we were able to do it pretty quickly. This table didn't fit in the tent so we left it in the garage to dry. Once it was dry, we were done! This paint doesn't need a top coat, which is a huge plus.

The whole project was a lot of work all together but I have to say it was all worth it.  It all looks so much better!  You can find all the products I used linked below.
