DIY Friday: Halloween Glitter Jars

Supplies:Jars- you can either recycle jars from salsa or other food or you can buy canning jars here and use themMod PodgeFoam Craft BrushesGlitter- I love Martha Stewart's but I think my favorite right now is the pack from TargetPaper PlatesStep 1: Gather all of your supplies and decide which colors of glitter you will be using. I chose black and orange for these jars but I have and will do other colors! Step 2: Make sure you are doing this somewhere you are ok with being covered in glitter. You can do it all neatly over a paper plate or you can take it outside. Since my 2 year old cousin was joining me on this project, we decided to do it outside! Start by use the foam craft brush to coat your jar with Mod Podge. You will want a pretty think layer to make sure glitter covers the entire jar. If you layer it on too think, your glitter will look patchy (this is from experience).Step 3: Holding your Mod Podge coated jar over a paper plate, shake glitter onto the jar. I tend to do this very slowly so I don't spill or waste any glitter. The 2 year old was not loving that plan and just dumped the entire bottle of glitter onto one side of the jar.Luckily she did this over the plate so the glitter was saved! Make sure to cover the entire jar with glitter. You can put your hand inside the jar and spin the jar while you put the glitter on it. This is a very good time to fix any patchy spots. Just dab a little Mod Podge onto the patchy spot and add more glitter. I always put the excess glitter that is leftover back into its jar. I have saved a ton of glitter that way.Step 4: Let them dry! I have discovered the shortest amount of time allowed to do this depends on the temperature of the room they are in. I tend to leave them along for about 4 hours though and that does the trick. Of you are patient and not in a hurry, you can let them dry overnight too.Step 5: Now that your jars are dry, shake them over the paper plate to release any excess glitter. This makes the next part easier. Take your foam craft brush and coat the glitter with more Mod Podge. This keeps the glitter on once everything is dry. Step 6: Let them dry. OVERNIGHT. This is pretty critical. Since the last layer of Mod Podge is what seals the glitter onto the jar, you want it to be 100% dry before you move or do anything with your jar.Step 7: Enjoy! These jars are fun and pretty and make a really easy project. They are also a very simple way to spruce up any small space! I will be making a lot more in the future...
