Organizing An Awkward Master Closet | Closet Size
I was excited about our closet when we saw the house. While it seems like an awkward space, the footprint is really large. The closet is 3 feet deep, 15 feet wide and 12 feet tall. Which means there is a ton of space! Before we moved into the house, I spent HOURS trying to come up with the best layout for the closet. You can see the one I was planning on using in the above pictures. After living in smaller apartments, I am all about utilizing all of the storage space you have.
My goal was to use as many storage/shelving items we already had and then supplementing with a few more things we had found online. But I decided to wait until we moved into the house so I could see what I was working with, in person.
Organizing An Awkward Master Closet | Decisions
We had to make a few decisions when we moved in. The master bedroom is large but we upgraded to a king size bed and had to include as desk for The Husband so he had a private space with a door to work during the day. After those two things, there wasn't a ton of wall space left in the room. So we decided to put our dressers (which I don't love the look of anyway) inside of the closet. This would help with utilizing the space while also not having to buy additional pieces.
Chuck helped me layout the closet. When we arrived, there were two rows of that terrible builder wire hanging racks on the 15 foot wall and one row on each of the 3 foot walls. After a lot of moving things around and measuring, we decided to take down the full bottom row of hanging racks.
Organizing An Awkward Master Closet | What We Used
Like I said, I wanted to use as many items that we already had, instead of buying a closet system or even buying new pieces for this space. So we started off using the bookshelves from our apartment family room. I didn't like these as actual bookshelves, they are a weird depth for books. So I used them inside the closet instead! We did find that there weren't enough shelves for what we needed so Paris suggested that I make a few more. We did just that! We bought some wood and painted it white and added them to frames. This allowed for more shoe shelves for me on one side and more basket shelves on the other side. This was a brilliant idea, thanks Paris!
Obviously, we also used our dressers. These belonged to my grandparents and are great pieces of furniture, but they are flawed. The drawers on these aren't great, they don't hold very much. I also don't love the dark wood color. My plan is to have someone refinish them for us and combine some of the drawers. Since we just bought a house, that isn't in the budget for awhile so putting them in the closet was perfect! This also allowed us to use the space underneath some of the clothes for drawers.
I did end up buying one thing for this closet, which was a double hanging rod. This allowed me to hang more of the Husband's shirts at the front of the closet, and use up some more of that dead space!
Organizing An Awkward Master Closet | The Top Shelf
Having a top shelf in your closet that is 9 feet off the ground isn't ideal. But it turned out to be great in our situation. I already had this shoe organizer from the other apartment and that went straight to the top shelf to hold winter shoes. I've also had these baskets for years, and they were great for sweater and heavy winter clothes storage. Winters in Tennessee aren't as cold as we are used to so we will see how many of those clothes we actually end up wearing in the next few years!
I purchased these two sets of cube organizers for the top shelves of Jackie's closet in the apartment. They weren't going to fit in her closet here, so I decided that they would be perfect in our closet. They were great for helping to break up dead space and allow for putting the suitcases on the top shelf without knocking other things off!
