Master Bedroom Update | Before

To be honest, there was nothing wrong with our bedroom before I updated it. It was perfectly fine. There is no lighting in the room other than the windows and the terrible floor lamp we had from the last apartment. I always felt like there wasn't enough light, especially after dark. Our bedroom is small, even smaller when you consider two people are in it. But when we moved in, we spent several hours measuring and deciding where each piece of furniture would go. So it was working, but I didn't love it.

I had purchased the bed frame when we moved into this apartment. We had a similar bed frame in our old place but I needed something taller so I could store more under it. You can read all about that in my post about How to Take Advantage of A Small Space.

I have loved our bedding from the minute I bought it. We had always had patterned bedding but I never really liked it. So I went with white bedding when I was pregnant. It was the best decision I ever made about our bedding. You can read all about why I love our bed here.

The top of my dresser had become scattered and cluttered. I am usually very organized and neat so it drove me crazy. I needed something else. You can read all about how I used to organized my jewelry here.

Master Bedroom Update | Why I Decided To Update

I have been wanting to do something different in our master bedroom since we moved in. I never liked how our room looked in our old place and I wanted to make our room into something I loved. I had wanted a head board for a long time and we had a huge wall that was mostly empty. I had several months of laying around, after my surgery, which gave me time to think about exactly what I wanted.

So I decided it was time to refresh our room. I wanted to better utilize the space as well as make it a space that we enjoyed being in. I couldn't move any furniture since we didn't have the space. So I was going to have to add smaller pieces that wouldn't take up any additional space but would add to the space. So I began my design process and the hunt for the perfect pieces.

Master Bedroom Update | After

I love how everything turned out. I am still thinking about putting another piece over our bed, but I haven't been able to decide if I want to or what it should be. Other than that, I think it is just what I wanted for now. I did keep our dressers (they were my grandparent's) and our nightstands, one of which is from the same set as the dressers and the other is from Target.

The headboard was something I spent a lot of time looking for. I didn't want anything I had to attached to the wall since we are renting so I found something that attached to our bed frame instead. I love the tufting on it and the neutral color was perfect for the rest of the room. I added these pillows to bring some more color to the bed.

I had no idea what I was going to do about the lighting. I had been agonizing about it for months and I couldn't come up with a way to deal with it. Floor lamps weren't working because of the carpet. The one we had before kept tilting to the side. Our night stands are not big enough for table top lamps. We had them at one point but they were knocked over on a regular basis. My mother in law came to stay with us when we transitioned back to the apartment from my parent's house. I told her what I was thinking and we went shopping. We found these lamps at Target and they were perfect. They have a square base so they don't tilt. The shelving gives us more storage and the colors work with the rest of the room.

I am thrilled with how the space around my dresser came together. I added this shelf to give me more vertical space. This added some more organization to the space. I raised my hanging jewelry so that it didn't get in the way of the shelf. I had seen this jewelry box in the Kendra Scott Summer 2018 catalog. I kept the catalog open on the ottoman until the box was released and I could go see it in person. I couldn't have loved it more. So it was my Mother's Day gift. It has a lot more space than it seems. I was able to eliminate some of the other boxes I had been using that didn't have any structure on the inside.

I knew I wanted a round mirror. I waited until this one went on sale and then I bought it. It is much larger than I was expecting, even though I measured it. It makes our room seem bigger and gives me another mirror in the apartment, the only other one is in the bathroom.
