How Window Treatments Can Elevate a Space

DIY

I had window treatments throughout my house I kind of just put up when we first moved into our house. As I've redone every room, I have started changing those window treatments and replacing them with something I absolutely love. Let's talk about how having the right window treatments can really elevate a space and my process in choosing the right window treatments.

How Window Treatments Can Elevate a Space | Primary Bedroom

First, let's start in our bedroom. I originally had a black rod with gray curtains that were not actually long enough. When I redid the rest of our room and painted it Dark Black Forest Green by Benjamin Moore, I got a gold curtain rod. It's actually, I think, a brushed bronze technically, but I really like it. It really pops with the color of the wall because whereas the black would have just faded right in and not looked great.

The window in our bedroom is actually three windows together, so it's much longer than the standard window. This meant I had to get a much longer rod and it took two curtains. I took curtain hooks and attached them to the curtain and then attached the curtain rings to those curtain hooks. Then, after adding those to the curtain rod, I was able to spread them out and work with all of the curtain rod supports.

I hung the rod as close to the ceiling as possible and I still had a lot of extra fabric, which I did intentionally when I bought the curtains. That gave me the flexibility to then go back in and shorten the curtains to the length I wanted them to be. I pinned up the bottom of the curtains when they were hanging so they hit exactly where I wanted them to. Then I took them down again, finished pinning them all at the same spot and sewed them where I wanted them. Now, when you enter our room the curtains look so much better and they really bring the whole room together.

I also have blinds on these windows to help with all of the light that comes in because there's a lot of natural light here. Later I added some curtain pulls to the walls so we could keep the curtains as far back as possible and let all the beautiful light in. I got these from Anthropologie, they are stunning just bring everything together.

How Window Treatments Can Elevate a Space | Jackie’s Bedroom

Now, for Jackie's room. When we first moved in, she had black pulls on the walls and a black curtain rod and pink curtains that were too long. I took everything down, patched up the holes, sanded everything, and then painted so I could work from scratch.

The curtain rods I got for her room are from the same place I got the ones for our room. I used curtain rings with clips on the ends. I swapped out her pink curtains for gray curtains that have a gauzy feel to them. The original pink ones were clashing with all the other pink in here and it really wasn't working for me. These gray curtains are a lot lighter looking and don't feel as heavy in the room.

I did the same thing in her room that I did in my room where I hung the curtains first and then I pinned where I wanted to sew them so they hung at exactly the length I wanted them to hang. I like my curtains to just skim the ground. You don't have a lot of extra fabric at the bottom. Her windows look so much better with the gray curtains and the gold curtain rods as opposed to the black ones with the pink curtains.

How Window Treatments Can Elevate a Space | Side Door

Now for the curtains on the sliding glass door on our main floor. Same thing again, I removed that same black curtain rod I had everywhere else. I took everything down, including the pulls on the sides of the doors, patched up the holes, sanded, and painted. Then I hung up the new rod. I didn't get this one at the same place as the other two, but I still really like it.

I decided to use the same curtains here instead of getting new ones because I really liked these. My main purpose for this door is privacy, not a lighting issue. I took the length from the top this time and cut off the rings at the top because I don't like that look anymore. I pinned a nice fold over seam, sewed that up, and then hung up the curtains, pinned the rest of the remaining fabric to where I wanted it to hit the floor, took them down, and sewed a bottom hem so they were the perfect length.

The really nice thing is you can do this without spending a ton of money. None of these curtains I'm showing you are more than, $25-50 a curtain panel, because I'm just not spending hundreds of dollars on curtains. I like that I was able to save some money, buy the less expensive curtains and DIY them to fit my needs. Lastly, I decided not to add the poles back or these curtains because I didn't need them and these hang really nicely and I love how they look as is.

I love seeing that simple fixes like curtains can make such a big difference in a room. You can shop anything I used below!
