DIY Friday: Bed Frame into Bench
The more pieces of furniture I redo, the more adventurous I get. I found this bed frame sitting out in front of a neighbors house on trash day. So I went and grabbed it. I know, its kind of weird. But I couldn't resist. Everyone has seen those bedframe into bench tutorials on Pinterest and I was in desperate need of more seating for our kitchen table.
Supplies:
- Bed Frame- you can get one from Cragslist or a yard sale
- 2X4s cut to the length of the bedframe and cut to how deep you want your bench to be
- Foam Cushion(s)
- Fabric
- Krek Jig
- Vice Grips
- Deck Screws
- Power Drill
- Piece of wood for seat
- Electric knife
- Upholstery Staple Gun
Steps
- I had to do some touch ups to the bed frame. There were some broken pieces so I used wood filler to fix those pieces.
- I measured the length of the bed frame and how wide I wanted it to be. I then bought the wood to be those lengths.
- I then screwed one of the pieces of wood onto the back of the bed frame. This was the base of the bench. I used the wood screws to do this so it would be a lot sturdier.
- I used the Krek Jig to make the necessary holes in the side pieces. This was safer then just drilling the pieces together.
- I cut the other end of the bed frame so I could use the posts for the edges of the front of the bench. You can see in this picture that I orginally left the feet on all four posts. The bench was too tall so I ended up cutting all four of the feet off.
- For the seat, I used a piece of extra wood we had in the garage. I cut that into three pieces that would fit evenly on the bencgI had to cut notches into the two end pieces so that they would be flush against the back of the bench.
- I had several pieces of foam that I had originally intended for the couch but they were not comfy enough. Using an electric knife, I cut the foam so it was the right size to have three across the seat. An electric knife is the best way to cut foam! I cut notches into the two end pieces so they would be the same as the piece of wood I was going upholster them to.
- I used the fabric to upholster the foam to the wood. I used my trusty upholstery staple gun to get the job done.
- I then used a small piece of wood to secure the three pieces of wood together.
- After a month of using the bench, I decided the seat needed hinges. I use the space underneath for storage so it only made sense!
- I added cushions to the back to make it more comfortable!
I love this bench, it has so much character! It is incredible heavy so I have to commit to where I put it!
