How to Spend a Week in Buenos Aires

After having family here for week I'm going to share with you the best way to spend a week in Buenos Aires if you want to take a trip here yourself.

How to Spend a Week in Buenos Aires | Sunday

Arrive on a Saturday and plan to take the day easy. On Sunday, you're going to go to the San Telmo Market. This market is open from 10 in the morning until 8 in the evening, but a lot of the stalls close up around 6. While the indoor part of the market is open all week long, the outdoor part of the market where all the stalls are is where you really want to go. I've been there during the week and it's definitely not as exciting so going on the weekend is key. You'll find a lot of local and handmade items at this market and it is incredible.

How to Spend a Week in Buenos Aires | Monday

On Monday, take it easy in the morning and then head to Barrio Chino for lunch. This is in the Belgrano C neighborhood. After lunch, you're going to go to El Ateneo Gran Splendid. This is a bookstore that used to be a theater and is one of the largest bookstores in South America. You can stop at the cafe in the theatre for a little treat on your way out.

How to Spend a Week in Buenos Aires | Tuesday

On Tuesday, you're going to go to Ecoparque. You want to go in the morning because this is when they feed all of the animals. Ecoparque is closed on Mondays so Tuesday is a really good day to go. If you have kids with you, do not miss out on the playground and two story carousel on the far end of the park. It is less than $2USD per ticket for the carousel.

Head to Fat Broder for lunch. It's about a 15 minute walk away. It is absolutely delicious and has a great gluten free burger.

How to Spend a Week in Buenos Aires | Wednesday

Wednesday is when you will take a day trip to Tigre. It's about a 45 minute to 1 hour train ride. You just go up and you can get on a boat. There's so many different boat options and you can pick somewhere to eat lunch. It's the perfect day trip.

How to Spend a Week in Buenos Aires | Thursday

On Thursday you're going to go to Museo Larreta in Belgrano. It's an old Spanish style house with gardens that has been turned into a museum. It's just a beautiful and peaceful place in the middle of the city that's very inexpensive to go to.

For lunch, you're going to go to Lo de Carlitos. Do not skip out on the savory crepes, they're incredible! After that, you want to go do some shopping on Cabildo and then have dinner at Deniro right up near Provincia.

How to Spend a Week in Buenos Aires | Friday

On Friday, you're going to go to Plaza de Mayo, so you're going to see the La Casa Rosada. You can do guided tours if you want and then walk your way down to Puerto Madero. Make sure you stop and check out the statue of Juana Azurduy because she was freaking awesome. Spend some time wandering around Puerto Madero.

I would recommend eating lunch at Campo Bravo. It is an incredible all gluten-free restaurant. Everything that we ate there was absolutely fabulous. I personally like to get the milanesas with noodles and the mozzarella melitas. My dad got the Patagonia steak and it was phenomenal!

How to Spend a Week in Buenos Aires | Saturday

On Saturday morning you're going to get up early and head to the Recoleta Cemetery it opens at 9 a.m. and the earlier you go the fewer people that are going to be there. This is where you can see so many famous people from Argentina, but very specifically Eva Perón.

Saturday is the best day to go because there is an awesome little market there on Saturday and Sunday. I love all of the stuff that we have found there so far, including a lot of gorgeous handmade things, nativity scenes, instruments and leather goods. For lunch, if you're anything like us, you'll go back to Campo Bravo because there are multiple locations around the city and it's worth having something else on the menu because it is so delicious. I would highly recommend getting the limeade with mint and ginger. It is life changing.

Now, if you're going to do this entire itinerary, be prepared to walk almost 50 miles, possibly 60 if you add in some shopping so pack some good shoes and prepare for a fabulous trip!
