Why You Need a Drill and a Driver

DIY

We're back again to talk about another set of tools that are really necessary. Today, we're going over why you need BOTH a power drill and an impact driver.

Why You Need A Drill and A Driver | What’s the Difference

First off, what is the difference between the two? A power drill is going to be bigger and is used the most. Power drills are great for drilling holes and then driving the screws into basic those holes. It is the number one tool that I think every DIYer needs. And actually I personally feel like every single home, whether you own or rent, should have some sort of drill whether it's corded or cordless.

Now you're probably wondering if a drill can make the hole for the screw to go into and then drive the screw into it, why do you also need an impact driver? To be honest, the first year of really seriously doing DIY, I felt the same way and I didn't use my impact driver. However, for the last two years I have been using my impact driver a whole lot more. So I can tell you from personal experience that it's important and super helpful, especially if you're someone who's doing a lot of projects. An impact driver has more torque than a power drill and is much more compact. Its only job is to drive those screws, bolts, or whatever you're using into the place where you want them to be easily and efficiently. It's other job is to make sure that you do not strip the head of your fastener. It's going to lock up if it feels like the fastener is not rotating, which can cause stripping of the head.

Now, why would you want to use both a drill and an impact driver at the same time when you're doing a project instead of just using the drill for both? Well, for one, it's convenience. If you have a bit on the drill that is drilling the hole and you have to then swap out the bit for another bit to then drive in the screw it ends up being a lot of back and forth. To be honest, I have lost quite a few drill bits in pockets and on floors doing it this way. It can be done and if you are on a budget the drill is going to be the most all inclusive tool for you.

However, if you're able to get both, having the impact driver makes a big difference when you're doing projects that require you to drill a lot of holes because you can keep the bit on the drill for drilling the hole and you can keep the bit on the impact driver or screwing in the screws, then you're just switching tools instead of switching bits. It's a lot more efficient and you're going to have a lot less script screw heads doing it that way. I promise you won't regret it! I've linked several options of different drills and impact drivers at varying budgets below.
