Why I Broke Down and Joined an MLM | My Direct Sales Experiences

I worked as an assistant for someone who was very high up in a direct sales company. It was the first job I had after I got married. This woman did everything for her downlines, she wanted to make sure they had all the tools they needed to succeed. I was fascinated by her. But I left my work with her and moved on to conference planning. But I always remembered what I learned.

Fast forward 4 years and I decided to join a direct sales company. I never thought I would actually do that. I always saw myself in an office job, but I wanted to do this on the side and saw it as a great way to earn extra income. I was selling makeup. I knew that I wasn't hurting anyone and that I could make it a fun experience. But it wasn't fun. I had to buy product every month. In order to make any money, I then had to sell that product. There wasn't any kind of training. No on was looking out for me and I was floundering. I was competing with other distributors for customers. I had to ship product out and pay for that shipping. The company itself was stuck in the 1990s and I didn't like the culture. I did my best. I was working this on the side and didn't want to make it a full time job. I decided it was time to get out. This wasn't what I had signed up for.

Why I Broke Down and Joined an MLM | Why I Joined Maskcara

I was introduced to Maskcara as a direct sales company by the same person who introduced me to the last direct sales company. As you all already know, I had been using Maskcara for years and I had several blog posts about it. After such a bad experience with the last company, I had to think hard before I jumped in again.

This time, I did my research. I made sure I knew EVERYTHING there was to know about the company before I started. I wasn't going in half blind this time. I blame myself for the last experience. I didn't do enough research. I could have seen the writing on the wall ahead of time. This time would be different. And it was. I knew EVERYTHING before I joined. It was easy, because all of the information is public and easy to understand.

Why I Broke Down and Joined an MLM | How Maskcara is Different

I have talked briefly before about why I joined Maskcara and why it is different from other MLMs. But I haven't gone into depth about it. So I want to now.

Maskcara Beauty is a debt free company. It is 100% owned by Cara and her husband. They don't put anything into this business that they can't afford to. The reason that is important is because they don't expect the artists to do that either. Because of this, there isn't a huge buy in. There are two artist kit options. One is $200, the other is $400. You pick which one you can afford. From there, you don't have to buy any other product. EVER. You can if you want to, for giveaways or customer gifts or for yourself. But never to keep as stock. All product is purchased from the website and corporate handles shipping. It is actually against company policy to buy stock and sell it. You do pay $12 a month to maintain your website. But that's it. I make commissions off the products I sell and I get a bonus each month if I reach certain goals.

Once you buy from an artist, you are always their costumer. So artists aren't competing for customers all of the time. I also know my customers. Some of them really well. This makes our interactions so much more personal. I love getting to know these women! That also means that there is an incredible community of artists that are all looking out for each other. It is possible to change artists but you have to request it from corporate!

There is a TON of training. Cara, the founder, gets on Facebook life EVERY SINGLE WEEK and does a webinar. She just had a baby and she is still doing these webinars. So everyone hears from the founder, every single week. Cara will talk about how to use the products, how to sell the products and will make announcements. There aren't any guesses about what is going on within the company. Everyone knows. And corporate listens to feedback. Cara regularly posts in the Maskcara Artist Facebook group, asking for our opinions on new products. And some of those products have been made. When customers consistently have a problem with something, the company fixes it.

This is truly a company for millennials. It is made to work online. You can definitely do it in person, having parties and color matching people but it was designed to reach people through social media. The website to order products from is user friendly and beautiful. We are encouraged to use Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest to reach new customers. I have had women that I have NEVER met, buy from me because they found me on social media.

Why I Broke Down and Joined an MLM | Become an Artist

I am going to be honest, I don't have any artists signed up under me. I have always focused more on selling then recruiting. But I am more than happy to be someone's upline if they are interested. You can either go directly to the website and sign up there, if you feel like you know enough. Or you can fill out the form below and I will start talking to you and answer any questions you might have!
