Revamping My Daughter’s Space

DIY

In 2022, we gave my daughter a play kitchen and I decided the best place to put it was in her bedroom. I wanted it secured and flush to the wall so I removed the baseboard in order to install it. Funny enough, this infuriated the internet. I got comments saying I would really regret removing the baseboards (in my own house) and I would hate myself when I had to replace them in a few years. It's been a few years now and, guess what? She's outgrown the kitchen. I'm taking the kitchen and moving it so its easily accessible for my son. I'm a firm believer in using your space to benefit you the most at that point in time. In 2022, having this as a play area for my daughter was the best use of the space. Now, three years later, it's not the best use for the space anymore and that's okay! So, I'm revamping her space and setting up the new kitchen play area for my son.

Revamping My Daughter’s Space | Out with the Old, In with the New

I took the play kitchen downstairs. I have a really long bar in the kitchen that is obnoxiously tall. A few years ago I put shelves on half of the area which left a small space that perfectly fits the play kitchen. Baby brother loves being able to play with the kitchen while I work in our kitchen.

Instead of the kitchen, my daughter now wants a place to sit and read. I took out the play kitchen and the play table, and moved two pieces of our Lovesac sectional into the corner as a a little reading nook. Of course, simply moving the couch pieces into my daughter's room alone wasn't enough for me. I had to step it up and make it an actual nook. I added a charging station into the arm of the Lovesac sectional using an outlet with a flat plug which made it super easy to get it flush up against the wall. Next step is my favorite: decor.

I took everything off the wall and did a little repair work from the Velcro that I attached to the wall. Again, this is my house and I get to do what I want with it, especially if I'm going to go back and fix it again later. I make sure everything is the most effective and efficient use of our space to fit our family. Once I got the repair spackled, I sanded it down and put a couple coats of paint on it so that it was all fresh and clean.

I found floating shelves that attach a bracket to the wall with some crews and then the shelves sit on the brackets and are screwed in. I went on to hang the pictures she had up previously on the opposite wall so that they looked better and the cozy nook vibe that we were going for. I put her chapter books on these shelves because that's what she's reading right now and then added some leftover Legos that didn't fit on the corner shelves on the other side of her room.

I finished it off with a few other nicknacks that she loves. I'm planning to get bookends for the shelves because the books desperately need them, but here's the full reading nook for now! It is perfect, exactly what she needs and a great use of the space.
