Our Stairs Basket System

As you know, our home is neurodivergent. We have two adults, a six year old and an infant with a combination of ADHD, autism and anxiety. Even with all of the stuff I have done to help reduce the clutter in our house, we somehow still end up accruing a lot of clutter. One of the things I have done to combat the clutter is having a basket system in place on our stairs. Don't know what a basket system is? Stick around and I'll explain it!

We 1-2 have baskets on both sets of our stairs, both on the bottom and at the top. I got the baskets we are currently using at the Target dollar spot over the last three years, so none of them are expensive. The way this works is throughout the day, as I find things that need to go upstairs, I put them in the baskets. Sometimes it's continuously throughout the day, sometimes it's all at once when I have a burst of energy or desire to clean, but eventually the baskets start making their way upstairs. To be honest, they don't go upstairs every day. Most days, we all walk past them several times before they end up going where they're supposed to go.

The whole point is to have everything contained in one place so when we are ready to go put stuff away, we can take the basket with us to the next floor and start putting stuff away. I normally have more than one basket in each location because I often have more than one basket worth of stuff going up to the next floor. Once I do have the time/energy to put things away, I try to do everything in the basket at once so I don't have any clutter left over from that specific basket. I don't necessarily do all of the baskets on the same day, but having multiple baskets help me to be able to see that I have accomplished a task without having the overload of having to do everything at once. Once the baskets are empty, I redistribute them back around the house.

To be honest, they do not stay empty long. There are times when stuff stays in a basket because I need to deal with it on that floor later. Sometimes it's parts of a project. Sometimes it's things like a set of blackout shades for my son's room in locations where there is going to be a lot of stuff going up and down the stairs. This system works really well for us and gives me the option of putting stuff in our house away when I have the time and energy to without being overstimulated by clutter.
