Myrtle Beach Family Beach Trip
Myrtle Beach Family Beach Trip | Myrtle Beach
We had so much fun with our extended family in Myrtle beach in July. We went with some of my mom's side of the family and there ended up being 22 of us, including the babies. I wanted to share some of the fun things we did while we were down there.I will be honest, there was a lot of hanging out at the beach, sleeping and eating. My family isn't big on doing tons of activities, which I personally love. But maybe this will give you some ideas for when you are in Myrtle Beach with your own family!
Myrtle Beach Family Beach Trip | Where We Stayed
We stayed in one of the 17 remaining houses available for rent on the Golden Mile. It's one of the only places where you can find large single family homes on the beach front in Myrtle Beach. This makes the beach in this area a lot less crowded. The house was probably built in the 40s or 50s and was a really cool house. There was a separate carriage house that had two bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom. That's where we stayed with Jackie, along with my cousin, her husband and daughter. This allowed us to have a separate space for the little ones to nap and go to bed early at night. This ended up being one of the best parts of the house! The house was just a few hundred feet from the beach, and that was all yard. While the house didn't have it's own pool, we brought a few inflatable ones. My cousin and I were talking and we were actually ok with not having an in ground pool at the house. It would have been harder to monitor the babies and would have been a big point of anxiety. The inflatable pools ended up being popular with everyone so it all worked out!
Myrtle Beach Family Beach Trip | Family Pictures
We took advantage of being at the beach and took lots of family pictures. We did a set of just Jackie, The Husband and me one evening and it was so much fun. I will be sharing more about that next week!On the last night of the trip we did family pictures with everyone there. We brought Emma on the trip with us and she ended up doing a lot of the pictures for us. I love how they turned out!
Myrtle Beach Family Beach Trip | Day Trip to Charleston
About half way through the week, all of the older cousins went on a day trip to Charleston. It's only about a 2 hour drive from Myrtle Beach so it is a perfect day trip, especially since we left the kids at home with their grandparents! I've talked about my love for Charleston here and some of the places we have eaten at here and here.Of course we had to stop by the Persimmon Cafe for lunch on our way into town. We try to go there every time we are in Charleston and they never disappoint. The added charm of eating at a cafe that is in a laundromat was just enough to make it a fun experience for everyone else. After lunch we just spent time walking around the historic parts of the city. We ended up splitting up so everyone could see the places they wanted to see. We ended at Rainbow Row because have you really been to Charleston if you didn't take a picture there and post it on Instagram? Sadly we had to get back to the house for dinner so we didn't get as much time as I would have liked there. But I'm so glad we did it!
Myrtle Beach Family Beach Trip | River Island Adventures
River Island Adventures was probably the highlight of the week. Jeff, the owner, also worked for the rental company that we rented the beach house from. After some issues we had at the house, he offered to have us come to the island to try out their Escape River Island Adventure. We went in with very little expectations of what the day was going to be like. It was about 20 minute drive from the house, which was nice. When we got there, we signed a waiver and then split off into teams of two. We were put into kayaks and directed to go down river to the island. Jeff met us there and introduced the activities to us. He showed us around the island and explained how the next few hours would work. This was basically a combination of survivor and The Amazing Race. We were given a bunch of challenges to complete and at the end of each challenge, we would get a clue for what to do for the following challenge. The goal was to get off the island and get back to the starting point up the river.Turns out we are a competitive bunch, especially The Husband and I. He was insistent on being the first ones to the island, so we ended up having to wait for everyone else. Everyone else said that we wore ourselves out early doing that. We probably did. But after being the second ones off the island, we ended up out paddling another team and came in first by 10 seconds. We were pretty smug about that! There are a lot of other activities and River Island Adventures including glamming, tubing and obstacle courses. Jeff was telling us about all of the cool things they will be adding in the next year and I honestly want to go back and see it all.I would highly recommend checking out River Island Adventures if you are in the Myrtle Beach area. We did take my 10 year old cousin with us for the Escape River Island and she did a good job of keeping up. But I don't think anyone younger than that would enjoy it as much. But there are other activities that would be fun for younger kids.
