How I am Keeping Jackie’s School Supplies Organized | Getting Organized

We are now coming to the end of week 5 of social distancing and stay home orders. Here in Virginia, school has been cancelled for the rest of the academic year and I have been working with Jackie on our own school. You can read more about that here and some of the fun activities we have been doing here. Until this week, I was really just winging this. I didn't have much organization so projects we were working on would end up in random places and we were all over the house, making messes everywhere. This week, we decided it was time to create a classroom like space for everyone's sanity. So let's talk about school supplies organization.

How I am Keeping Jackie’s School Supplies Organized | The Room

To start, we are very blessed that Paris has offered up a room in her home for us to use as a classroom. We are social distancing with my parents so this has been disruptive for them as well. This room has been the library/exercise/play room until this point. But this week, we took out all of the exercise equipment and added the furniture we wanted to give this more of a classroom space.

We added a small 4' table to this corner where we could put the sewing machine and computers. My parents already had the table, from all of the conferences we have attended so it was an easy addition. The stool is from HomeGoods a few years ago but I have linked some similar ones at the bottom of this post. The Lovesac has been in my parents' basement for years and this was the perfect location for it. We took some time trying to decide which chair would be best up here and this was the one we decided on. The girls love it! The pillows are ones I have made over the years!

How I am Keeping Jackie’s School Supplies Organized |The Closet

We decided that putting most of the school supplies in the closet was the best place for them so we could keep everything close by but easily put away. We utilized the Elfa drawers that were already in the closet to help with the organization. I bought the pink buckets at the beginning of all of this to help with the organization.

I wanted everything to be easily found and for the older girls to be able to walk into the closet and find what they were looking for. So we used the label maker and assigned items to certain buckets and drawers. The buckets are mostly used for items that we aren't using every day or that I don't want Jackie to get into on her own, fabric, buttons, other craft supplies. The drawers hold games and other activities that I want everyone to have access to daily.

How I am Keeping Jackie’s School Supplies Organized | File Folder

I bought this file folder when I did my very first international conference in 2013. It's been on a shelf collecting dust since 2016 but when I was getting things together for social distance home schooling, I remembered I had it. It is an accordion file folder that also drops down and can be hung on the wall.

I assigned each girl a folder, gave myself a folder for lesson planning and then a section for blank coloring pages and projects to do. The older girls can go into the folder and get out a project or coloring page they had been working on in the past or they can get out a new project if they have nothing else to do. This has been one of my favorite ways to stay organized through all of this!
