Charleston, South Carolina: Where We Ate
This trip was really about eating. We walked around and explored a lot but we ate some amazing food too. Charleston is one of the most gluten-free friendly cities I have ever visited, so I wanted to share where and what we ate.Lunch 5/5- Best-N-Burgers: This was a place we found off of I-95 in Wilson, North Carolina. There were several other food options at this exit but we decided to eat here. All they serve are Cheeseburgers and fries. And they do an excellent job of it! When I asked for my burger without a bun, the waitress wasn't even phased! She asked if I wanted it wrapped in lettuce. Not only was it wrapped in lettuce, it was wrapped in foil too! Dinner 5/5- Persimmon Cafe: This was our first meal in Charleston. We looked them up on Yelp! and they had amazing reviews. We walked from the other side of the city just to eat here. Persimmon Cafe is located inside a laundromat so you get an interesting vibe. The staff is amazing and was able to offer us a lot of other restaurant recommendations. Not knowing what my options where, I opted for a salad, the Lemon Berry Cooler and chips. The Husband also had a Lemon Berry Cooler but had a Grown Up Grilled Cheese. Once we finished eating and talked to the staff more, we learned that they sold GIANT gluten free cookies and they could make all of their sandwiches on gluten free bread. We bought some cookies to take back to the hotel with us, they were amazing! Lunch 5/6- Kitchen 208: This place was right around the corner from our hotel and also had some great Yelp! reviews. Apparently they have incredible brunch, but we were too late for that. The Hubby had the Belgian Sandwich (fried chicken between two Belgian waffles) and I had the Wedge Salad. We were both happy with how our food came out. Dinner 5/6 - Five Loaves Cafe: I had read a lot about the Five Loaves Cafe. Apparently you need to eat here if you are gluten free. I have to agree with all of the reviews! You can order any of their sandwiches on gluten free bread and they have a lot of other gluten free items on their menu. When I ordered the whole sandwich option of the House Smoked Turkey sandwich, I figured I would get a whole sandwich...instead I got too! The food was excellent and the price was perfect.Lunch 5/7- Bon Banh Mi: This was one of the reccommendations from the staff at the Persimmon Cafe. The Husband was extremely excited about this meal. I had the Ginger Lemongrass Chicken Tacos and we split an order of egg rolls (which were gluten free!). This was an excellent meal! Dinner 5/7- Hominy Grill: This was our last dinner in Charleston and I had heard this was a must in Charleston. They had a gluten free menu and there were a lot of options. I went with the shrimp and grits (which were amazing!) and we had the chocolate mousse for dessert. Apparently Alton Brown loves it! Lunch 5/8- Persimmon Cafe: We had to stop back by the Persimmon on our way out of town. I really wanted one of their gluten free sandwiches and The Husband and I both loved their Lemon Berry Cooler! I had the grown up grilled cheese. Delicious!
