Celebrating Día de las Infancias in Argentina
August 18th was Dia de las Niñas or Dia de las Infancias, which is Childhood Day here in Argentina and it is a BIG deal. I had so many people ask me if we celebrate this in the US and we don't, but I can confidently tell you that we should!
This holiday started in Argentina in the 1950s. The UN established an International Children's Day and encouraged every country that was a part of the UN to follow suit and establish their own National Children's Day and Argentina actually did it. After collaborating with The National Chamber of Toy Commerce and having to move the dates around due to elections, they landed on the third Sunday in August for National Childhood Day. When I say this is a big deal, I mean it! There are signs everywhere, every toy store has a sale, communities and local parks have activities and every child adjacent activity is a big deal, and most are free.
Another big thing is getting your kids presents, kind of like Christmas in August. I, of course, never miss out on an opportunity to spoil my children, so I had to participate and because it was on a Sunday, we were going to be doing some activities at church as well. I got cute gifts for my kids at a local store. I tried to stick to things they love, but also things I have not seen in the U. S. I just put them in regular shopping bags we have because we have so many of them and gave them to the kids that morning.
At church, we had a really fun activity with the kids. They had treats and there were gifts for them. It was just such a fun day. Sadly, while we planned to go and do other activities, we ended up not doing much else the rest of the day because baby was not feeling super great. this is a huge deal here in Argentina. I absolutely love it and it's something I really think we need to start doing in the U.S. What do you think?
