Our Favorite Baby Proofing Products | Baby Proofing
I have been putting off this post because I wanted to be sure that I shared only the products that we loved and worked the best for us. We did have to baby proof everything but considering we live in less than 1000 square feet, there wasn't a ton to baby proof. We baby proofed almost everything in April when we moved back home after my surgery. We recently added a few appliance locks since Jackie has gotten stronger and is starting to get into those things. There has been a lot of trial and error with these. I am also still experimenting with what works best in the new places Jackie is discovering. I initially didn't put anything on the drawers in our bathroom but Jackie has recently discovered the drawer with all of our my hair products. I think I may have to add something to that to keep her out!
Your child is going to try to get into everything. One of the things I have learned with baby proofing is to give Jackie something she thinks she shouldn't be getting into but is really ok for her to have. One of the cabinets in our kitchen has heavier appliances in it (pressure cooker, mixer) that she can't move. So I put a basket of tumblers in there and she plays with them all the time. She thinks she is being sneaky, I am keeping her safe, and she doesn't really try to get into the other cabinets.
Our Favorite Baby Proofing Products | Under the Sink Locks
This has been both the easiest and the hardest product to find at the same time. I found the Safety First under the sink magnetic lock for our apartment. We used them in our bathroom and in the kitchen. I wanted something that was strong but could be removed easily when it is time for us to move out. One package was enough for our place. Since I don't go under the sinks every day, having magnetic locks hasn't been an inconvenience.
We also needed something for Paris's house. We tried three different brands of under the sink locks before we found something that worked. Paris has hooks that hang on the inside of the cabinet doors under the sink in her kitchen. That made the magnets harder to connect and they didn't work very well if at all. We ended up trying an external lock that has worked perfectly. So I would strongly suggest experimenting until you find something that works for you.
Our Favorite Baby Proofing Products | Appliance Locks
The external lock we used on Paris's sink was the Munchkin Xtraguard Dual Action Multi Use Latches. I bought two sets of them and we only used three at our apartment so I took the extra one to Paris's. At our apartment, we used them on the trash can, fridge and dishwasher. I love this lock because it can be undone when it doesn't need to be locked. I don't always need to keep the fridge locked. So instead of constantly having to unlock it, I can leave it unlocked until I need to lock it. The same goes for the trash can and the dishwasher. I honestly wish I had found them sooner because I would have used them in a lot more places!
Our Favorite Baby Proofing Products | Cabinet Locks
When it came to our cabinets, I wanted something that was damage free. Something that I wouldn't have to remove when it was time to move and was easy to get on and off in the moment. I was thrilled when I found these sliding locks. They work with most cabinets and can easily been taken off.
I talked earlier about how we leave a cabinet open for Jackie to play in. It makes it seem like she is getting into something while she really isn't. The sliding lock on that cabinet lets us decide if she can be in there or not!
Our Favorite Baby Proofing Products | Stove Covers
When I first ordered the stove knob covers, The Husband thought I was being ridiculous. Jackie was not tall enough to reach the knobs on the stove and it made cooking a little more difficult. But in the last few months, Jackie has discovered that she can indeed reach those stove knobs.
Instead of scrambling to find something at the last minute, I already had the covers on and Jackie didn't know any different. She thinks thats how stoves are made and after trying to knock them off a few times, she gave up and moved onto something else.
Our Favorite Baby Proofing Products | Outlet Covers
This is a no brainer. Everyone needs outlet covers. Kids like to try and put their little hands into outlets, I have no idea why. They also like to take off the outlet covers, and are sometimes successful. There are a lot of different kinds of outlet covers and you are going to have to experiment with which ones work best for your kid. You want ones they can't pull out of the socket but you can. That is more tricky than you think! You can get outlet plates that have a sliding cover built into them if you own your own home.
Our Favorite Baby Proofing Products | Couch Covers
Yes, couch covers. You may remember when I did the DIY post on reupholstering our couch. Since that was my first big furniture DIY, I was pretty proud of myself. Enter an infant who could care less if she spits up on the couch. Paris kept telling me to get couch covers but I could never find any I liked. So many couch covers have a weird texture to them and I wanted us to continue liking our couches. While I was up with Jackie in the middle of the night once, I found these. They come in serval colors and sizes and are incredibly soft. I love that they are two pieces too so it doesn't look so much like a couch cover.
With couch covers, I can throw them in the washing machine every week or so. Or whenever Jackie spills juice on them. Do yourself a favor and save your furniture. Luckily there are so good looking covers out there.
