ADHD Accommodations I Use

I've had my ADHD diagnosis for more than half of my life. With that, I've had a lot of trial and error in determining things that help me succeed with my ADHD. Let's talk about the 13 main accommodations I use that help to make my life easier.

Alarms

I use alarms for everything from pick up and drop off for school and therapies to work meetings and everything in between.

Daily Medication

Taking my ADHD medication every day is crucial for me. This isn't going to necessarily work for everybody because I know some people only take their medication on days when they need them. I have found that its important for me to take my medication and it has been something I've been consistently doing for the last 16 years. Make sure you talk with your medical provider and do what works the best for you.

Monthly Medication Organizer

This is important for me because I only have to fill it once per month, I can access all the meds I need in one place and just easily make it part of my daily routines. I really like one I use currently because you can take it apart and only have to use one week at a time.

Hands Free Shoes

I've only been doing this the last few years, but I try to get only hands free and laceless shoes for myself. This has been so incredibly helpful. It may seem like a small thing but taking the time to sit and tie shoes really throws me off when I'm trying to run out the door. Hands free shoes are a game changer!

Grocery delivery

We use Shipt for Target because I can get more than just food there and I try to have everything delivered about once a week. This means I don't have to go to the store and get overwhelmed by walking the aisles. It also means I spend a whole lot less money.

Food Storage Containers

I store our food in clear containers for the most part. While this is aesthetically pleasing, I actually do this so I can see how much of everything we have. It makes grocery shopping a lot easier and we have a lot less food waste this way.

Meal Subscription Services

Meal subscription services are a lifesaver for us. By using them, I no longer have to plan out meals, they just show up to our door which makes dinner time decision-making super simple. We save money and time this way because we have less food waste and aren't resorting to take out. Both me and my husband can make meals whenever we need them made because they have easy instructions to follow. We did HelloFresh for a long time, now we're doing Home Chef. I found the meals with Home Chef to be faster to make, which is a lot nicer with two small children.

Virtual Body Doubling

Body doubling is when you have someone else in the room with you while you are doing a task. This is super useful because it helps you stay focused on what you're supposed to be doing. Sometimes that's just not an option for me, but one of the ways I go around this is by virtual body doubling. This means I film myself cleaning up or working on a project and that actually helps motivate me to keep going and then posting on social media keeps me accountable.

Labels

I use labels on everything and when I say everything, I mean everything! If it is in a basket and you can't see through the basket, it gets a label on it. If it's in a drawer and you can't see through the drawer, it gets a label on it. This way, I can find things, my husband can find things, and our daughter who can read can find things as well. I like for my labels to be bigger, so I normally use my Cricut to make them, but a label maker is also an option I know a lot of people use

Robot Vacuum

We have a robot vacuum that is scheduled to clean every day. I have found that having something on a schedule that just runs and I don't have to remember to turn on or do myself, is a lot more effective than just remembering or even setting a timer every day for me to vacuum. This way I can do other things while the vacuum runs. As an added bonus, the one we use empties itself, so I don't have to worry about finding that extra motivation to actually vacuum. It just happens.

Cleaning Service

We have a cleaning service that comes two times a month. This is something we only started doing recently because we couldn't afford it in the past. We made it a priority in our budget and it has made a huge difference for me. I despise actual deep cleaning, and so having someone come and do this makes it so I am not just continually putting off the task.

Amazon Subscribe and Save

This service is so important for us because I often forget to buy something until we are already out of it but with a subscription service I don't have to remember to buy it. We have the things we need show up at our door before we run out. It’s so nice.

Wireless Headphones

I have multiple pairs of wireless headphones, including $20 and under ones, as well as AirPods. Frankly, I tend to use the cheaper ones more often because I lose them quite often. This is why I have multiple pairs. I use them pretty regularly so I can listen to stuff while I work on projects, clean the house etc. Having something in my ear keeps me motivated on tasks and therefore able to check things off my to do list faster. Hopefully these tips can help you find things that help you manage your ADHD too. You can find all of the products I mentioned linked below.
