Adding A Black Midi Dress To Your Closet | What's In My Closet

I know when I look at my closet as a whole, I feel like I have more color than not. So when I see a cute black midi dress, I tell myself I don't have any and I should probably get one. Turns out, when I was pulling dresses out of my closet for this post, I have quite a few. They are all VERY different though and I will be doing a try on of them in my Instagram stories today if you want to go watch that! All of those dresses are also linked below where I have linked out to any other blog post I have done that includes a black midi dress. You can also find a bunch of black midi dresses at the bottom of the post.

So when you are out shopping or scrolling through dresses online, how do you decide to add a black midi dress to your closet? You obviously don't want to add every black midi dress you come across, so what are the characteristics of the "right" one?

The "right" black midi dress is going to be different for everyone. But that doesn't mean that aren't basic guidelines to follow to get something you will wear for years to come. So let's talk about those guidelines.

Adding A Black Midi Dress To Your Closet | Comfort

For me, the biggest thing when deciding on a black midi dress is comfort. As you can see from the posts I have linked below, my black midi dresses range from formal to very casual. But that doesn't mean the more formal dresses have to be uncomfortable.

Try the dress on. Sit in it, walk around it in, jump up and down in it. I am not kidding. Bend over. Does the dress ride up somewhere? Does it pull in an uncomfortable place? Pass!

If the dress moves with you and is something you could wear for hours on end, then you have found a good dress. You might not believe it but the dress from this post is a favorite of mine. I wore it to a conference last year and wore it ALL DAY. I wasn't worried about it pulling or riding up. I would happily wear that dress all day again. And I do for other events. That is the kind of dress that I add to my closet and I will keep for years to come.

Adding A Black Midi Dress To Your Closet | Length

Let's talk about length. "Midi" is going to usually means that the dress hits between your knee and mid calf. But honestly, some places categorize dresses that hit at the knee, as midi dresses.

For me, when it comes to length, I look for something between my knees and ankles. I have long legs so "maxi" dresses tend to be shorter on me than most people. I have a wide range of lengths when it comes to black midi dresses. They go from my knees to mid calf. The length of each dress depends on when/where I plan on wearing it. The longer dresses tend to be my mm uniform dresses that I wear in the spring & summer. The shorter ones, around my knees are dressier that I will wear to church to to work events. But you need to decide what length(s) you are looking for or willing to add to your closet.

Adding A Black Midi Dress To Your Closet | Color

Yes, color. Have you ever noticed that there are different shades of black? I am not crazy, I promise. But this is something you want to be aware of. Some black dresses are not as deep as black as others or can look almost like a dark gray.

Like length, this is all about personal preference. I like deeper black dresses. Specifically because accessories pop more against a deep black dress. But I have seen some other lighter black dresses that do look good as well, I just don't usually buy them. But you need to decide what you are going to pair with your black midi dress and if those things will pair will with it. Can you easily mix and match what you own with this dress?
