A Weekend in Colonia del Sacramento
Come with us for a weekend in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay! Our original plan was to be on the 12:30 PM Buquebus ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia, but immigration decided that we needed a document that we didn't actually need. So we had to push our ferry back to the 6:45 PM. Since it turned out that we didn't actually need those documents, it was incredibly frustrating that we lost half a day. However, once we were able to get on the ferry the day really turned around.
A Weekend in Colonia del Sacramento | A Short Ferry Ride Away
The ferry ride took about an hour. When we got off the boat there was a very sweet dog that met us at the boat terminal and then followed us all the way to our Airbnb, which the kids loved. The next morning we got up at about eight o'clock. My husband went to one of the local places to rent a golf cart because he read somewhere that it's the best way to see Colonia and I cannot recommend this more, it was such an easy way to see the town! We didn't have to rent a car and it was only $50 for the day. We returned the cart at 3 pm, which was perfect because our boat back left at 5. I cannot stress how imperative it was to just get up and get going early. Once my husband got the golf cart It was about nine o'clock and it was so empty in all of Barrio Historico, which was really nice because as the day got later, there were so many more people, and a lot more crowded.
A Weekend in Colonia del Sacramento | Exploring the City
We got to see all of the really cool places and get tons of pictures with almost no-one else there. Most of the stores were open when we were there between 9 and 11. A lot of the restaurants were opening at 10 as well and then a lot of the ice cream places were opening at 11. It was very easy to walk around Barrio Historico with the kids. We did use the stroller since it was able to fit it in the back of the golf cart. I would recommend that if have the option for a sturdier stroller versus a travel stroller to use the sturdy stroller. There are a lot of cobblestone streets and some older cobblestone streets that are just really rocky and hard to navigate if you don't have a good solid steady stroller. We walked around for about an hour and, like I said, we had the entire place to ourselves There were probably 10 other groups total and they were just couples for the most part. There were a few families But no big tour groups. It was not crowded. It was absolutely wonderful.
After exploring Barrio Historico, we decided to go to the other side of the town to see the Colonia sign. It was a lovely drive and totally doable in a golf cart. We saw the Plaza de Toros where they still do bullfighting. Then stopped at the Colonia sign for some pictures. By then the baby was ready for a nap. So we went home to the Airbnb, put the baby down. While he was sleeping, my daughter and I went shopping for a little souvenir for her and explored Barrio Histórico a little bit more.
We returned the cart at 3 pm, which was perfect because our boat back left at 5. On the return trip from Colonia to Buenos Aires, we were on a larger Buquebus boat, which I actually liked better. We walked from the Buquebus terminal to the Retiro Mitre station, got on the train and went home. I really wish we'd had that extra half day that we were planning on, but we will definitely be going back. It was awesome! I can't wait to continue exploring a few other cities in Uruguay that you can take ferries from Buenos Aires to.
