5 Things I Look For In A Dress | Dresses

I have been wearing dresses in the summer for the last 5 or 6 years because it is much better than wearing pants. You won't be able to argue with me on this one. Dresses are 100x better than pants. This summer, dresses have been even more of a staple in my closet because wearing pants isn't exactly comfortable due to the screw literally sticking out of my hip. So I have invested some time and money in buying dresses that I love so I can wear them over and over again and be comfortable and cool. I wanted to share with you the 5 things I look for in a dress when I am buying them.

I have also rounded up a bunch of dresses that I am loving right now for you to shop at the bottom of this post!

5 Things I Look For In A Dress | Comfortable Material

My number one thing is what material the dress is made out of. Is it comfortable? Is it going to wrinkle? Am I going to have to iron or steam it? I like dresses I can throw on and look put together without putting forth too much effort. So I want a dress that has a material that both looks good and is comfortable.

5 Things I Look For In A Dress | Fit

I need to have a dress that fits well. There are a few silhouettes that I know look good on me and I tend to stick to those. I know I can get a fit and flare dress and it will work. Or an A line dress. Or a body-con dress. Any of those will work on me and I am comfortable wearing them. I do sometimes stray from those styles but they are generally what I start with and what I tend to wear.

5 Things I Look For In A Dress | Care Instructions

I will admit, that I have paired my closet down a lot so that I only have a few dry clean only dresses. I have a toddler and most of my dresses will end up getting something on them. If not from Jackie. from me. So I need dresses that I can throw in the washing machine and will do well when washed. This kind of falls under the material section but I do look at this as a separate category.

5 Things I Look For In A Dress | Length

This is one of the most important ones for me. As a professional and a mom, I need dresses that hit around my knees or below. I don't want to wear dresses that are going to be riding up when I bend over or even sit down. I also don't want to be wearing really long dresses that I can trip over while chasing Jackie around.

5 Things I Look For In A Dress | Pockets

Does the dress have pockets? Not all dresses do but when I find one that does, and checks off all of the other boxes, I am sold. I may even buy that dress in a few colors if I like it enough. Not all pockets in dresses are created equal though. Often, pockets just had extra material to a dress and can throw off the entire look. So when I found this dress from Uniqlo that has front pockets that didn't bulge or add extra fabric, I was thrilled!
