Where I Buy Gluten Free Food | Eating Gluten Free
So I technically don't need to eat gluten free. I have a wheat allergy, which means that I can eat other grains that have gluten in them. You will see me eating a bag of BBQ chips or snacking on Reese's peanut buttter cups. But generally I eat gluten free because I know that way I am safe from eating something that was contaminated with wheat. Finding gluten free food has gotten easier in the 8 years since I was diagnosed with my allergy. Most grocery stores carry gluten free brands and some even make their own gluten free products. But not all gluten free foods are created equal, and some are just plain bad. So today I am sharing where I buy gluten free food and what I get from each place.
Where I Buy Gluten Free Food | Lidl
Lidl is a German grocery store that we went to a lot when I was a kid and would visit my grandparents in Germany. My family was so excited when we found out they were expanding to the US and thrilled when one was put in not too far from my parent's house. It is probably where I do most of my grocery shopping now. They have a lot of really good stuff, both gluten free and regular. The prices are pretty hard to beat too!
Lidl has their own brand of gluten free items. They are all packaged in purple with yellow writing. They can be found all over the store, sprinkled in with the regular food. I have tried almost all of their gluten free items and I have yet to be diasppointed! We love their delux gluten free mac & cheese. It comes with an already ready cheese so you don't have to worry about adding milk, butter and the cheese powder.
We also love their pretzels! The Husband will eat gluten free pretzels and he has even been happy with these. They have really good gluten free waffles and chicken nuggets!
Where I Buy Gluten Free Food | Harris Teeter & Target
Harris Teeter is a good place for large gluten free brands. They are easy to find and usually labled with a Gluten Free sign on the aisle. I have found that some stores, not all, will sell gluten free baked goods that are Harris Teeter brand. These can be found in the bakery section, in the refridgerators.I usually buy crackers, pretzels, gluten free pizzas, breakfast sandwiches and other odds and ends from Harris Teeter.
Target is similar to Harris Teeter in that they have most of the major gluten free brands. I typically buy Udi products from Target, including bread and muffins. Udi is one of my favorite gluten free brands but they can't be found everywhere. Target is a good place to find them!
Where I Buy Gluten Free Food | Trader Joe's
If you don't already know, Trader Joe's only sells their own products. This can be both good and bad. If you are looking for a specific gluten free product, you should probably look else where. But they do make their own gluten free items and they are all really good. I did buy their gluten free bread a few weeks ago and I was really impressed. Gluten free bread is one of the harder gluten free items to get right. Most companies don't do it well. The sandwich bread I bought from Trader Joe's was actually delicious. The slices were on the smaller side but that was my only complaint.
They also have some gluten free baked goods, which are also really good. I do like their mini cupcakes better than their standard size cupcakes. They just aren't as sweet. There are lost of gluten free items in their freezer section as well, all of which are marked.
Where I Buy Gluten Free Food | Wegman's
Do you know about Wegman's? It's an East Coast chain that is mostly in the Mid Atlantic and Northeast. If you havne't been, you need to go! They have their own bakery where they produce gluten free items including brownies, cookies and cakes. They do have a lot of gluten free options from major brands but instead of being scattered throghout the store, all gluten free items can be found in the Gluten Free section. It is typically located near the health foods section. One of my favorite things to get are the donuts that are located in the freezer part of the gluten free section. I tend to avoid going to Wegman's so I don't buy the donuts very often.
