The Best Homemade Popcorn | Homemade Popcorn

I have been making popcorn since I was in high school, so over 10 years. A family friend had given us a hand crank popcorn maker and I took some time to practice making it. Over time, I perfected a recipe that I loved but other people loved too. I had friends come over and beg me to make it every week.

That hand crank popcorn maker has always been at my parents' house and I've only made popcorn there. Since social distancing started, The Husband and I decided to do Saturday night movie nights with Jackie to introduce new movies and let her stay up a little later after a long afternoon nap. I knew I wanted to include popcorn in our new movie night tradition so I went looking for the same popcorn maker. Turns out, you can find them everywhere! But the same one is marked up at some stores so for this best deal, get it here.

The Best Homemade Popcorn | Recipe

I would love to say that I have spent the last 10 years perfecting the exact measurements but that would be a total lie. So here is what I have found that works:

1/4 cup popcorn

4 tablespoons vegetable oil

3 tablespoons of butter

Salt to taste

If you are trying to make popcorn for lots of people, you want to double this recipe! This will make about one medium sized bowl of popcorn.

  1. Place popcorn popper on stove on medium heat. Put 1/4 cup of popcorn & 4 tablespoons vegetable oil in popper. Close lid.
  2. While the oil heats up, melt butter in microwave for 30 seconds in a 3/4 cup or 1 cup sized measuring cup
  3. When the popcorn begins to pop, start turning the hand crank
  4. When all of the popcorn has popped (you will be able to tell, there will only be one or two pops at the end) pour into medium sized bowl.
  5. Pour butter over popcorn and use measuring cup to coat popcorn with butter.
  6. Add salt to taste. You will need more salt than you think but you will need to play around with the level of saltiness to get it to where you want it. I liked my popcorn really salty so I do A LOT of salt!

The Best Homemade Popcorn | Final Thoughts

Like I said in the recipe, you will need to play around with the amount of salt you put on your popcorn. It will likely take you a few tries to get it right. I have tried lots of different brands of popcorn kernels and I have to say that Orville Redenbacher's are the best brand to use!
