Dinner At Joe's Southern Kitchen & Bar-London
I did a bad thing. I became the guy I used to mock. I went out for American
food in London. I'm here on business and after a very long day we decided
to go walk around Covent Garden, my favorite part of London. We stumbled upon Joe's Southern Kitchen.
I was starving and it actually looked legit. If your are in London and craving a (mostly) authentic southern BBQ
experience, you could do a lot worse. Joe's features a lively young crowd,
and cool quirky decor, including "southern language training" piped into
the bathrooms.
They nailed the interior. Almost to the point of being annoying. It is clearly a popular spot with locals. The staff was dressed in American jeans and flannel shirts. How do they make the ice cubes look like that??
The bar was really neat-looking. There was quirky memorabilia everywhere.
My burger was good. I'd be willing to bet this is one of the better burgers you'd find in London.
Chuck had the "Jailhouse Platter" on an actual prison platter. It was pulled pork. He said it was "good for London, but not Michael Character's (aka the greatest BBQ on earth in North Georgia)". I found the choice of butter beans a little curious given that these guys seemed to be going for authenticity. A real southern BBQ joint would serve baked beans. Ironically, the English love baked beans, but eat them mostly with breakfast.
The fries were the real star of the show. They were crispy and salted with chicken salt. They also had real ketchup, not that nasty sugary crap Europeans often try to pass off as ketchup.
