Last Minute Halloween Costumes

We had a minor Halloween crisis this year. I ordered the kids' costumes from Taylor Joelle like I normally do. They have great sensory friendly dresses and shirts that can be worn as costumes as well as every day. We've been a big fan ever since my daughter was little.  We ordered our costumes in September. The kids were going to be Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde from Zootopia. My daughter chose a dress and my son doesn't wear costumes so the Nick Wilde tee was perfect. However, there was a manufacturing delay making it so we couldn't get their stuff in time. Taylor Joelle was amazing and gave us a few options, we could choose from one of the in stock items or get a refund. I was really worried that this was going to cause a meltdown, since my daughter often doesn't handle change well, but she handled it SO well. None of the in stock items stood out to her so I had her choose from her existing Taylor Joelle collection and we would make her brother's costume around that, like her little sidekick.

Last Minute Halloween Costumes | Anna and Olaf

We narrowed it down to two options; Anna and Olaf from Frozen II and Moana and HeiHei. Since we already had the dresses for my daughters costume all we nee to make it the sidekick shirts for my son. Olaf is really easy. I started with a simple white sweatshirt for Olaf and a few 25 cent black felt sheets. I used a glass from my kitchen, traced it and cut out the buttons for Olaf. Then I used spray adhesive to attach them. It's a super simple costume that you can make with things that you have laying around.

Last Minute Halloween Costumes | Moana and HeiHei

The HeiHei costume took a little bit more work. I originally was going to just lay zig-zag cut felt sheets across the shirt, but I decided that I wanted to do feathers instead. I discovered that folding each sheet in half and then cutting out a feather gets me two feathers. I did that with the red, orange, gold, and yellow felt. I used two sheets for the front of the shirt making about 20 feathers in each color. I only did about 10-12 of the red feathers, though, because I only did one row of those.

I didn't want to just leave the sleeves out because I felt like it looked unfinished. I cut out green felt and added those to the sleeves to make them look like feathers/HeiHei's wings. I also wanted to do something on the back, but doing feathers on the back and the front made the t-shirt a little bit stiff. So instead, I just did a tail on the back with more of the green feathers. We added stuffed animals to go with each set and love how they came together! I'm so proud of my kids and how they rolled with the punches this year while still carrying on the tradition of having a sibling costume.
