10 Things You Didn't Know About Me On My Birthday | I Like To Keep My Birthday Low Key
I don't like making a big deal about my birthday. My parents threw me big parties until I was 12, and then we kept things really low key. Since my birthday is at the end of August, we were usually traveling on my birthday so it was often not celebrated at home. We weren't on those trips for my birthday, it just worked out that way. I am perfectly happy to have a gluten free cupcake and be with the people I love on my birthday. And please, don't sing to me!
10 Things You Didn't Know About Me On My Birthday | I Wanted To Be A Doctor
When I was about 8, I read an article about Doctors Without Borders. Specifically Maciofacial surgeons that traveled to South America to perform plastic surgeries on people who couldn't afford them. I knew the minute I read that it was what I wanted to do when I grew up. I had it all planned out. I would get my undergrad, enlist in the Airforce (I come from an Airforce family) and then get my medical degree. I would serve my time in the Airforce and then retire into private practice so I could work with Doctors Without Borders. Then I took Chemistry my Sophomore year of high school. My teacher was literally a drunk. She never taught us anything. I was lucky to pass the state standardized test that year. The teacher ended up losing her job and I never caught back up with chemistry. My dream died that year. Luckily, I had already started showing interest in the family business!
10 Things You Didn't Know About Me On My Birthday | I Wanted To Be An Interior Designer
After my plan to be a doctor back fired, I figured I needed another plan. I had always been interested in the family business but my dad raised me to have a plan, a back up plan and plan C. That way I would always have something to fall back on. The family business was always plan A, but I thought going to school to be an Interior Designer would be awesome. I love designing things and have always had a knack for decorating. Maybe that's why I do this blog. It is my creative outlet. I even choose the college I went to for their Interior Design School. But as we all know, that is not what I ended up doing!
10 Things You Didn't Know About Me On My Birthday | I Have An Excellent Sense of Direction
I am not kidding, I can go somewhere one time, day or night, and I can almost always get there again. It can be 3 years later, and I can still get there. When I was in college my roommates made me pretend I didn't know where people lived because they thought it was creepy that I never needed directions more than once. It is just a skill I have and it comes in handy! I rarely get lost. I can be driving somewhere and need to take a detour and I can usually find my way without getting out Google maps.
10 Things You Didn't Know About Me On My Birthday | I Can Sleep Through Just About Anything
I am lucky on this one. My mom and older brother both have a hard time sleeping. My younger brother, dad and I don't. Our joke is that my dad can lay down anywhere and be asleep in 5 minutes. While I don't have that skill, I can sleep through just about anything. Except Jackie crying in the night. That's just a mom thing. When I was 16, we went on a cruise of the Mediterranean. On the excursion from the boat to the island of Capri, the water was really chopping and 99% of the boat threw up. Did I? Nope, I was asleep!
10 Things You Didn't Know About Me On My Birthday | I Have A Fascination With Stars
I grew up near Washington DC. We were lucky to see much of anything on a clear night. But my uncles taught me the basics of constellations and where the planets are when I was little and I have been fascinated every since. I remember when I moved to Utah for college and seeing how amazing the sky was at night. I could see the Milky Way! The Husband got such a kick out of it that his computer background has been a picture of Calvin & Hobbs looking up a the stars ever since we started dating (thats 7 years people!).
10 Things You Didn't Know About Me On My Birthday | I Did the Disney College Program
In May of 2010, I went to Disney World to participate in the Extended Disney College Program. My program lasted until January 3, 2011. It was an amazing time and I loved every minute. I made some amazing friends that I still keep in touch with. I worked at EPCOT in the Futureworld area of the park, which covered The Art of Disney, Club Cool, Pin Station and two carts. While I was trained in all of the locations, I worked mostly in The Art of Disney. I loved selling the art work and apparently had a knack for it. One of my managers told my mom that I could sell anything.
10 Things You Didn't Know About Me On My Birthday | I Love The Heat and Humidity
It is no secret that Summer is my favorite season. I love Fall and Winter but give me the beach and a 98 degree day and I am happy. The thing you don't know is I LOVE humidity! I know most people don't but I think it's because of where I grew up. Virginia can get nasty in the summer but I love it. After spending the summer in Florida during my Disney College Program, I loved it even more. I will take heat and humidity over cold and dry any day!
10 Things You Didn't Know About Me On My Birthday | I Am An Introverted Extrovert
I promise, it is a thing. I love being around other people. I love going to parties and organizing conferences. But at the end of the day, I need time alone to recharge. I need to be in my own space, doing my own thing. If I can going somewhere where I don't know anyone, I tend to be shy. I won't go up to a stranger and introduce myself. I have gotten better about that since I started doing conferences but it is still really hard for me!
10 Things You Didn't Know About Me On My Birthday | I Have Peanut Butter Obsession
Like I will literally eat it out of a jar with a spoon. I did that for 1/3 of my meals my freshmen year of college, just out of pure laziness. When I am craving salt, it is my go to. It started when I was little and my mom would give me a spoonful of peanut butter as a snack. Looking back, it was a quick and easy way to get me to stop talking! But it's something I still love and I have even introduced it to Jackie!
